Inhalt: Media Organize brings together students from the new MA programs Media and Digital Cultures and Culture & Organization to reflect, explore and curate everyday technologies in terms of their organizational capacities. The course is dedicated (and to some degree structured by) specific, and specifically mediating, objects that shape the practices, processes and affects of organization. Such media configure organizational (power) relations that are in-built into the devices and apparatuses of organizational life. Therefore, ‘media organize’ (Reinhold Martin). Practices of cultural labour and cultural organization rely on such media. At the same time, it takes labour, organizing and organizations in order to produce media (consider only the contemporary behemoths of data-driven and platform-based organization). Designed as a one-off event, Media Organize is carried out in conjunction with the Kunstverein in Hamburg and the artist Simon Denny, also professor of time-based media at Hamburg’s Hochschule für bildende Künste (HFBK). Denny’s artistic and curatorial practice investigates how our perception and experience of culture is profoundly changed and shaped by dint of organizational technologies. In cooperation with Denny, the course will be part of the preparation, conceptualization and design of an exhibition in the Kunstverein in Hamburg dedicated to the organizational capacities of everyday technologies. The exhibition will be called Proof of Stake: Claims to Technology and is scheduled for August-October 2021. The Proof of Stake exhibition takes The Oxford Handbook of Media Technology, and Organization Studies (edited by Timon Beyes, Robin Holt and Claus Pias) as its starting point and will work with Lüneburg’s Centre for Digital Cultures and this course’s students and guests in planning, realizing and accompanying the exhibition. Therefore, Media Organize has as learning goals, 1) understanding the intricate and consequential relations between media technologies and forms and processes of (cultural) organization; 2) exploring organizational capacities of specific objects understood as technological media; 3) devising and curating an exhibition experience that seeks to stage objects as technologies of organization.
