Inhalt: Chemistry is not only a science subject but also a very important industry sector worldwide. Without Chemistry our present standard of life would be possible – just think of medical drugs, pesticides, synthetics, detergents, fertilizers, and other products - last but not least fossil fuels and materials for electronics and renewable energy. Wihout a more sustainable chemistry there will be no sustainbale development. However, many people perceive chemistry as negative, particularly under the pollution aspect. In the more developed parts of the world the unintentional emissions in the environment do not play an important role any more, thanks to legal regulations and technical procedures that avoid or eliminate emissions. Since the 1990ies it has become clear that on the one hand chemical products cause the major emissions of the chemical industry. Chemistry as a science but also an industrial sector is indispensible to reach the Sustainable development Goals. A more comprehensive view on chemistry is needed, e.g. the entire life cycle of a chemical product from the raw materials production until its disposal at the end of its usage phase must be reviewed. The young and highly innovative field of sustainable chemistry has been developed from this perception. It will be outlined in an interdisciplinary approch in the lectures of this module. While sustainable chemistry is often perceived as green chemistry, based on the reduction of waste and energy use for chemical syntheses, the lecture will introduce a more comprehensive approach on sustainable chemistry. The focus is on the following topics: - The realm of sustainable chemistry - Resources and sustainable chemistry - Green reactions and syntheses - Criteria and guiding principles for sustainable chemicals, materials and products - Benign by Design - Dissipation - Sustainable management of substance flows and material flows - New business models - The framework of Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) - Chemistry related international conventions
