Inhalt: South Africa is one of the countries of the African continent which are frequently in the limelight of media interest. This is not only because it was the first African country to host a Soccer World Cup in 2010, but also because of its seemingly peaceful transition from apartheid to demoncracy. South Africa has also become a prime tourist destination for Europeans and Americans who travel there to enjoy the hospitality of South Africans, the diverse landscape and its rich culture. South Africa is often referred to as the "Rainbow Nation", a metaphor for its multiculturalism and the many ethnicities that have influenced the culture and society of the country. Another term often used is "unity in diversity". The image of the rainbow, consisting of all the colours of the light spectrum seems a very fitting image, as it is also perceived as a natural phenomenon. Today South Africa understands itself as a multicultural society with many different different ethnicities and languages with a common aim and one progressive constitution.

Study & Save: Anglo-American Approaches to Eco Criticism (Seminar)

Termin:
wöchentlich | Donnerstag | 14:15 - 15:45 | 18.10.2021 - 04.02.2022 | C 5.310 Seminarraum

Inhalt: In this seminar we will study various facets of eco critical expression. We will examine how different approaches - narrative and otherwise - reflect the way nature and environment in general as well as different environmental issues in particular (such as pollution, deforestation, and the loss of species) are dealt with in society. In order to do justice to the ethical and political dimensions of environmentalism, we will discuss current eco-critical hotspots in the Anglo-American world and beyond. And since there will be a symposium on "human-animal studies" in January 2020, special attention will be given to the aspect of "critical animal studies."
