Introduction to International Relations (Seminar)

Inhalt: International politics is a key subject of daily news: from the conflicts in Ukraine and Syria via the trade “war” between the United States and China or the coronavirus pandemic to the diplomatic haggling in large international negotiations, such as the recent United Nations Climate Change Conference in Sharm el-Sheikh. The seminar introduces students to the academic study of international relations, that is, relations between states that reach beyond national borders. We will discuss seminal readings in three main areas: war and peace, functional international cooperation, and international political economy. While we will occasionally engage contemporary politics, the focus in this course is on learning about typical dynamics and governance structures in international politics, the concepts that scholars have developed to understand them, and academic arguments about the reasons that underlie such dynamics. The course employs a mixture of formats, such as short lectures, group discussions, student presentations, and break-out groups.

Krisen in der europäischen Integration (Seminar)

Inhalt: Die EU scheint in einer Schleife von Dauerkrisen zu stecken. Euro- und Finanzkrise, Migrations- und Schengenkrise, Corona-Krise, Brexit-Krise, Krieg in Europa. Welche Auswirkungen haben diese tiefen Krisen auf die europäische Integration? Mit dem Blick auf ausgewählte Krisen versucht dieses Seminar, die Funktionsweise der EU, ihre „Natur“ und das politikwissenschaftliche Nachdenken über die europäische Integration besser zu verstehen. Studierende werden somit am Ende des Semesters die EU Organe, deren Interaktion, wichtige Politikfelder und zentrale Hypothesen wesentlicher Integrationstheorien kennen und in der Prüfungsleistung eigenständig anwenden.
