- Since 2009: Appointed professor of ethics with lifetime tenure, specialization in sustainability and sustainable economics at Leuphana University of Lueneburg
- 2010–2012: Vice-president of Leuphana University of Lueneburg
- Since 2010 : Visiting professor for business and ethics at University of St. Gallen
- 2007–2018: Director of research area Religion, Politics and Economics at Humboldt University, Berlin
- 2013: Appointed by the Oxford University’s Rhodes Trust as national secretary administering scholarships for German nationals
- 2012–2017: Academic advisor to the former head of the IMF and former German Federal President regarding a post–2015 agenda of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) and the World Ethos Project
- Since 2012 ordained Lutheran pastor in home parish in Schäplitz (Altmark) in eastern Germany
- 2009–2013: Academic advisor to the German Federal Ministry of Finance for business ethics, G20 and globalization
- 2006–2009: Academic advisor to the German Federal Ministry of the Interior coordinating the German Islam Conference
