Dr. Rafico Ruiz
Rafico Ruiz holds a Ph.D. in Communication Studies and the History & Theory of Architecture from McGill University. He completed a Bachelor of Arts (with Great Distinction) in English Cultural Studies and Geography at McGill University (2004), and a Master of Arts in French Cultural Studies at Columbia University (2005). He studies the relationships between mediation and social space, particularly in the Arctic and Subarctic; the cultural geographies of natural resource engagements; and the philosophical and political stakes of infrastructural and ecological systems. He is the co-editor and co-founder of Seachange, a journal of Art, Communication, and Technology and reviews editor at Culture Machine. In 2012, he was a visiting fellow in the Department of Media and Communications at Goldsmiths, University of London. In 2012-2013, he was the Max Stern McCord Fellow at the McCord Museum and Archives in Montreal. In 2013-2014, he was a Wolfe Fellow in Scientific and Technological Literacy at McGill University. In Spring of 2015, he will be a visiting fellow at Leuphana University’s Centre for Digital Cultures. His work appears in the International Journal of Communication, TOPIA: Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies, and Communication +1, amongst others. His research has been supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the Institute for the Public Life of Arts and Ideas at McGill University, Media@McGill, the Canadian Centre for Architecture, the Smallwood Foundation of Memorial University, and the Harvard Medical School’s Countway Library of Medicine.
