Art, Memory and the Built Environment (FSL) (Seminar)

Inhalt: The key issue of this seminar is the study of the interwoven appearance of urban spaces, the transformation into different structures and the overlay created by use, economy, events and politics with local and global aspects. Who are we, where do we come from and how is it reflected in our built environment ? What is our relation to our surrounding in order to question taken-for-granted categories of citizenship, identity, culture and memory ? With the term “built environment” we are referring to those surroundings created for humans, by humans, and to be used for human activity. Examples will include urban spaces, buildings, roads, squares, parks etc. The study of the built environment is interdisciplinary in nature and will refer to such disciplines as: visual arts, architecture, town planning, history, engineering, interior & industrial design, cultural geography, environmental studies, anthropology & sociology. During an excursion to Berlin (on Friday & Saturday, May 17 + 18, 2024 - meeting point on Friday 2 pm to be announced; end of excursion on Saturday at 6 pm) there will be a special focus at the different layers and districts in the German Capital, exploring the city with Walter Benjamin and Franz Hessel in our luggage. The next seminar session will start at Leuphana in Lüneburg on Friday, June 14 at 2 pm to be continued on Saturday, June 15, 2024. Digging into the origins, nature, and evolution of public discourse in democratic societies will create insights and knowledge. Students are encouraged to develop a deeper consciousness about the fabric of urban life. They will interpret most diverse situations, encountering familiar elements in the most unlikely of territories and discuss cultural conversion in relation to cultural mobility, the politics of representation, looking at the history of cultural exchange, related to the transfer of ideas and design, art and representation, advertisement and propaganda, production, trade and politics with a special focus on the built environment.
