Constructing Futures (FSL) (Seminar)

Inhalt: In times of multiple and permanent crises, such as climate change, increasing inequalities and (geo)political conflicts, the future is becoming increasingly visible as a contested terrain characterised by different, sometimes diverging and contradictory perspectives. The seminar’s topic are humanities approaches that make sense of, analyse, conceptualise, or theorise such social processes of negotiation and construction of contentious futures. After an introductory session, it begins with a collective and interactive future workshop followed by three content blocks, one on key theoretical framings of the future in the humanities, and two on the thematic focus of catastrophe and utopia; for one of the sessions on utopia, we’re happy to have research fellow Dr. Egidijus Mardosas as guest. Verstehen und Erklären: Methodische Grundlagen der Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften (Seminar)

Inhalt: Jedes kulturwissenschaftliche Arbeiten zielt darauf ab, etwas zu verstehen oder zu erklären, seien es theoretische Zusammenhänge oder empirische Phänomene. Verstehen und Erklären sind deshalb als grundlegende Verfahrensweisen der Geistes- und heute Kulturwissenschaften Gegenstand wissenschafts- und erkenntnistheoretischer Reflexion. Seit Wilhelm Diltheys Diktum, „die Natur erklären wir, das Seelenleben verstehen wir“, geht es dabei um Fragen nach der Unterscheidung von Sozial- bzw. Kultur- und Naturwissenschaften, der intradisziplinären Differenzierung entsprechend verschiedener Methoden, Gegenstandsbereiche oder Theorien und letztlich um die Frage, mit welcher Art von Realität es das wissenschaftliche Arbeiten zu tun hat, ob diese gesetzmäßig strukturiert ist oder umgekehrt aus einer Ansammlung regelloser Individualitäten besteht. Das Seminar bietet einen Einblick in diese Kontroversen über die Lektüre und Diskussion einiger kanonischer Positionen und exemplifiziert die darin verhandelten Problemstellungen.
