Einführung in das Mentale Lexikon (Seminar)

Inhalt: In this course, the nature of the human word-store or mental lexicon will be explored. We will discuss relevant theories about the organization and structure of the mental lexicon and empirical findings. Among the questions that will be addressed are the following: How is semantic information represented and organised in the mind? How do we recognise words? How do we deal with lexical ambiguity? How are morphologically complex words represented in the mental lexicon? What role does morphological structure play in the on-line processing of complex words? A variety of theoretical and experimental psycholinguistic studies will be considered in addressing these questions. Closely connected with issues of organization and structure are the questions of how people acquire and/or learn new words. Based on answers to these questions, we will also discuss the implications for vocabulary teaching and learning.

Language, Society and Culture: Evaluation in English text and discourse (Seminar)

Inhalt: In its common-sense meaning, evaluation refers to a decision about how significant or valuable something is, based on a careful study of its good and bad features. In discourse analysis, evaluation is a constitutive part of every act of communication, where it can be expressed both explicitly and implicitly. While the former is based on the use of particular adjectives, nouns, verbs or adverbs, the latter is anchored to stance adverbials. The goal of this seminar it to examine how evaluation is expressed in English text and discourse, focussing on written discourse (academic discourse, media discourse), spoken discourse (monologue, dialogue) and internet discourse.

Text and Discourse: Critical Discourse Analysis (Seminar)

Inhalt: Critical discourse analysis (CDA) is a contemporary approach to the study of language and discourses in social institutions. Drawing on poststructuralist discourse theory and critical linguistics, it focuses on how social relations, identity, knowledge and power are constructed through written and spoken texts in communities, schools and classrooms. The goal of this seminar is to introduce the tools, key terms assumptions and methodology used in CDA, and to apply it to diverse contexts (media discourse, educational discourse and other kinds of institutional discourse).

Inhalt: Second Language Acquisition (SLA) is a theoretical and experimental field of study that examines language development, in this case the acquisition of second languages. The term second includes "foreign" and "third", "fourth" (etc.). The dominant aim behind this research is to extend our understanding of the complex processes and mechanisms that drive language acquisition. SLA differs from second language teaching, methodology, and curriculum studies although findings from SLA research may inform practices in foreign language education. The goal of this course is to look at different theories of SLA, and to discuss their relevance to second-language learning.
