Kants Kritik der Urteilskraft (Seminar)
Dozent/in: Heiko Stubenrauch
Termin:
What is the Contemporary? On the Relationship between Time and Images (Seminar)
Dozent/in: Maria Teresa Costa
Termin:
wöchentlich | Mittwoch | 12:15 - 13:45 | 14.10.2024 - 31.01.2025 | C 14.103 Seminarraum
Inhalt: What is the Contemporary? And what is contemporary to us? Starting from these questions we will analyse images outside of and beyond a linear and evolutionary time model, which proceed from the past through the present up to the future. We will consider images in a broad sense, coming from both art history and other fields, such as advertising, newspapers, video and social medias, to mention only a few. Why are some images (also older ones) attracting us, speaking with us and even calling our names, while in front of other images we feel a distance or even perceive a temporal or historical extraneity? In this seminar we will linger on the question about the elements and factors that let us feel images as belonging to our time. The relationship between images and temporality is of decisive importance for dealing with the nature of the image itself, helping us to understand the inner logic of the image and its related argumentative structure. Facing the temporality of images means then confronting ourselves with the question about how images produce meaning for us. During the seminar we will explore such questions through the reading of some seminal texts by Walter Benjamin and Aby Warburg among others.
