Thinking sustainability from a Latin American perspective: realities, discourses and challenges (FSL) (Seminar)

Inhalt: Although sustainability is a worldwide topic, its meaning and implications vary in other realities and contexts, such as the Latin American scenario. In this sense, Western countries' top-down sustainability discourses and approaches to tackle wicked sustainability problems do not fit the challenges Latin American countries face. From understanding the consequences of the colonization process, this seminar will offer an overall picture of the most pressing sustainability topics in Latin America and introduce the students to another way of thinking about sustainability, drawing on Latin American cosmovisions and the signification of the environment and nature. This seminar will be structured in 14 sessions, covering different topics: 1. Introduction to the seminar 2. Environmental history of Latin America 3. Geo-political scenario in Latin America 4. Social media content analysis of sustainable fashion (Seminar)

Inhalt: In sustainability transformations some of the most urgent challenges are connected to unsustainable practices in the production and consumption of textiles, clothing and fashion, which now are being fueled by business models rooted in social media communication and retail. Although the consumption and use of both fashion and social media are part of our daily routines, we hardly acknowledge the impacts these practices generate in society and the environment. This seminar will cover contents related to methods and techniques to analyse the impact of social media on fashion consumption and how the emerging area of sustainable fashion is positioned in it. Introducing students with qualitative and quantitive approaches (and with statistical nuances), the students will explore mainly specific methods to (1) extract, analyse and categorize social media content, (2) identify and differentiate certain populations, communities and goups, and (3) monitor the engagement and impact of content through specific metrics. This seminar will cover the following themes (subject to change): How clothing is made and its impacts Textile-fashion supply and value chain and their sustainability impacts Ultrafashion, sustainability and social media Characterization of the sustainable fashion niche through social media snowball sampling Extraction of data from social media Identification of narratives of sustainable fashion initiatives on social media Circular economy in the fashion industry Industry 4.0: Transparency and traceability Communication, marketing and greenwashing
