Masterforum Environmental Social Science (Kolloquium)

Dozent/in: Paul Upham

Termin:
wöchentlich | Mittwoch | 10:15 - 11:45 | 06.04.2020 - 10.07.2020 | W 106

Inhalt: UPDATE 24.03.2020 COURSE TAKES PLACE IN VIRTUAL FORM **Covid-19 amendment and summary of how the course will run: each week I will convene us in Zoom and we will go round in a virtual circle, each of you telling the group about your plans, however provisional. We will all discuss, make suggestions etc. You will work towards presenting an expose in powerpoint and in Word. Towards the end of the course, you will present the ppt to us (i.e. a summary of your expose) and send me both by email for the exam. If there are too many people for presentations, I will just grade the ppt file and expose sent by email. I can have bilateral discussions with you during the seminar or later, but generally everyone benefits from hearing each others' issues in the group format. Please just bear with the delays in interaction that the technology will probably induce!** This will be a discussion forum via which I aim to help you solve general problems in your research. I will draw your attention to issues that you might not be aware of and will help you meet the norms of good environmental social science research. I am not all-seeing and all-knowing: I can't teach you all of the methods that you may need to know and I won't know all of the literatures that you need to know. Rather I aim to help you think about your approach to knowledge, literature review, formulating research questions and objectives, structuring a dissertation, time planning, publication planning and so on. For this purpose I have uploaded some powerpoint slides previously developed for the same purpose, but these will just serve to prompt your own thinking. I have also uploaded papers on different aspects of research philosophy, design and methods.
