Inhalt: The hatred of democracy, as Jacques Ranciere reminds us, is as old as democracy itself: The word emerged in as an insult, decrying the illegitimate government of the unruly masses. Over millennia, democratic self-government was something people fought for, while others fought against it. In this seminar, we critically examine and engage with efforts to undermine, delegitimize, circumvent or destroy democratic ways of organizing social relations. We will deal with both theoretical and practical attacks on democracy, and learn about historical and current efforts to construct non-democratic forms of power.

Art Publics (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Justin Skye Malachowski

Termin:
wöchentlich | Donnerstag | 16:00 - 18:00 | 07.04.2025 - 11.07.2025 | C 5.325 Seminarraum

Inhalt: Art has increasingly led into public forms, coming to dominate contemporary art practices, exhibitions, and museums. Yet, the definition of the “public” in public art remains vague and varied. "Public" might refer to the mode of artistic exhibition: art presented in public spaces or art that is publicly accessible, encompassing everything from statues and free museum days to murals and graffiti. Similarly, "public" might indicate art produced for a general audience rather than just small groups of art-minded individuals or elite collectors. Public art also carries political and social significance, as it may be created as a public good or intended to influence social and political dynamics. Notably, public art can involve participatory and collaborative practices, aiming to engage the public and include them in the production of art. This course examines the various ways in which art has come to be regarded as public, while critically exploring the concepts of “art” and "public" in relation to contemporary political modernity, society, the state, and democratic practices. Additionally, this course invites participating students to experiment with the idea of public art through the production and curation of public art installations. The concepts and ideas from the course material will be approached through artistic experiment.
