“Repairing Futures: Anticipation, Participation and Speculation” – Laura Forlano

2016-12-13 DCRL Semester theme: Design and Repair, Winter Semester 2016/2017

6–8pm

Venue: Freiraum Lüneburg Salzstr. 1 / 21335 Lüneburg

How can we repair and care for emergent futures in which bodies, labor and infrastructures are implicated in continual economic and environmental destruction? This talk will present examples from three projects that engage with the aesthetics and politics of the socio-technical infrastructures that are shaping these multiple futures. These projects draw on a variety of approaches that cross traditional design domains such as art, social science and engineering. Through practice-based design, this research uses games, workshops, prototypes and videos in order to engage in narratives around networked digital technologies through anticipation, participation and speculation.

Laura Forlano is an Assistant Professor of Design at the Institute of Design and Affiliated Faculty in the College of Architecture at Illinois Institute of Technology where she is Director of the Critical Futures Lab . Her research is focused on the intersection between emerging technologies, material practices and the future of cities; specifically, she writes about emergent forms of work, organizing and urbanism. One of her current projects focuses on driverless cars . She is co-editor with Marcus Foth, Christine Satchell and Martin Gibbs of From Social Butterfly to Engaged Citizen (MIT Press 2011).
