On the 21.8, Alexandr Burilkov published a front-page feature in the National Interest, a leading Washington D.C. foreign policy magazine, on a possible strategy on ending the conflict in Ukraine. He argues that the failure of the Ukrainian summer counteroffensive makes it less likely that the conflict ends in a “Korea scenario”, where there is a ceasefire, a demilitarized zone, and strong Western security guarantees. Instead, Russian hardliners now have the political capital to launch a Russian offensive, possibly after a second partial mobilization. This makes opening negotiations with the US in a leading role an urgent priority.
