Theories of Democracy (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Dawid Friedrich

wöchentlich | Donnerstag | 10:15 - 11:45 | 20.10.2022 - 02.02.2023 | C 12.107 | .

Inhalt: Democracy - it is omnipresent in world politics. Sometimes as a positive aim to strive for, sometimes as a negative frame to move away from, sometimes by deploring its alleged decline. But, at a closer look, it becomes clear that there is no agreement about what democracy actually is. An idealistic idea? A pragmatic form of government? Tyranny of the masses?...Consensus, however, seems to be that democracy both as practice and as theory is concerned with the relationship between the rulers and the ruled, those who govern and those who are governed, subjects and objects of authority. The aim of this seminar is to elaborate and discuss some contradictory goals that are connected with the concept and practice of democracy: Participation vs. elite competition; deliberation vs. conflict of interest; public control vs. private autonomy; competition vs. consensus democracy. In addition to the different theories of democracy we shall also focus on the current diagnosis of the crisis of democracy. Furthermore, we tackle aspects of democratic citizenship (value orientations, democratic "virtues", attitudes towards democracy, electoral and participation behaviour, political socialisation and its transformation over time).
