Applications of Psychology in Society: Intervention and Evaluation C (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Dirk Lehr

Termin:
wöchentlich | Freitag | 10:15 - 11:45 | 08.04.2022 - 08.07.2022 | C 6.316 Seminarraum | .

Inhalt: In this course, the topics of intervention and evaluation are not only considered theoretically, but also very practically in a real project. The students will become part of the developmental psychological research project " Atempause", which will take place in the school year 2020/2021 at several primary schools in and around Lüneburg. Within the research project, an intervention will be developed, carried out and evaluated. Both the survey instruments required for the evaluation and the implementation of the intervention will be piloted, i.e. tested, in one or two primary school classes during the seminar. Possible challenges and sources of error are identified and eliminated before the main project starts. The different stages of the project and the pilot phase are also examined theoretically.

Applications of Psychology in Society: Intervention and Evaluation D - Marketing Ethics and Society (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Meikel Soliman

Termin:
wöchentlich | Mittwoch | 10:15 - 11:45 | 04.04.2022 - 08.07.2022 | C 12.108 Seminarraum | C 12.108

Inhalt: Marketing is everywhere in society and nearly every organization, whether nonprofit or for-profit, uses marketing in some form as an intervention to communicate a specific idea and/or elicit behavior - marketing wants to influence people. Yet marketing is one of the most controversial activities an organization can use to pursue economic and social goals. Critics argue that marketing manipulates people without their knowledge, using psychological research to promote materialism and unsustainable consumption, exploiting consumer psychological processes, or targeting vulnerable groups in society that cannot defend themselves. Marketing is so present that it affects all people in a society: Who has not bought things in a supermarket that he/she did not want? Who has not been tempted to make a purchase by an advertisement or a commercial clip? And what about manipulations that actually happen for our own good? Is it okay for people to be encouraged to behave in a certain way by nudges without being aware of it? What psychological processes underlie the impact of marketing? This seminar discusses these and other criticisms and discusses the interplay between marketing and society and provides insights into consumer psychology. Among others, questions such as "What is behind the term marketing ethics?", "Is marketing allowed to target young or vulnerable groups?", "Which psychological processes do organizations exploit to make consumers behave in a certain way?", "How justifiable is marketing in pharmacy?", "Are potentially dangerous products allowed to be marketed?" and "How is and must marketing be regulated?" will be highlighted. In addition to a lively and critical discussion of these issues, ways in which marketing can address these challenges will be presented. These questions will be examined under the aspects of cultural differences between societies and historical changes of the term "marketing". In addition, the impact processes of consumer psychology will be demonstrated and discussed.
