Inhalt: Students will continue to prepare all aspects necessary to host the international conference, "White-Indian Relations: Moving Towards the 21st Century". Students must attend and help host the conference from May 14-17, 2009. While learning about the history, culture and literature of indigenous people from both Canada and the United States, we will also discuss and practice ways of effectively communicating knowledge in an international conference setting.

Inhalt: "Words, words. They're all we have to go on." - Tom Stoppard, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead Words are, in fact, often all we have to go on; they give us clues and open windows to a wide range of perceptions about human nature. Words can conceal and reveal, confuse and abuse as well as enhance and entrance. This course will take logomaniacs in search of le mot juste on a expedition to the bottom of things so that they can be on top of things. Consequently, we will examine an eclectic array of topics such as word origins and current usage; connotations and denotations; clippings and blends;homonyms, homophones, and homographs; metaphor, metonomy, and synecdoche; inclusive and exclusive language; euphemism and offensive language. The initial sessions of this course will be devoted to assisting students in acquiring vocabulary-learning techniques as well as to examining effective word formation and usage. In the subsequent sessions, students will have the opportunity to refine these skills in various practical and creative assignments.

Englisch/FSZ: Current News Topics (C1) (Übung)

Inhalt: This course is designed to familiarize students with news reporting in the print media and the public discourse on contemporary issues. In addition we will contrast news reporting on controversial issues (e.g. teen age pregnancy, etc.) with fictional depictions of these topics in film and literature.

Inhalt: Each participant will gain experience working with reference works, writing essays, a c.v., etc. This course will also touch on certain points of Academic English, gender neutral language, English punctuation and mechanics. Homework, attendance, and active participation are required.

Inhalt: Making significant contributions to contemporary American literature are a number of native authors whose works have their roots in the storytelling tradition of their respective tribes (Sherman Alexie, Thomas King, N. Scott Momaday, Leslie Marmon Silko, Louise Erdrich). Studying Native American literature requires an openness to experiences and events that have historically been pushed to the periphery of our cultural awareness. If successful, the seminar will be a contribution to the dialogue that has been challenging the literary canon in the United States and Canada for the past decades.

The diverse history of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland has led to very different cultural traditions. Inhalt: The first part of the 20th century was unarguably one of the most prolific eras for lyrics in the United States. It was a time when modernist poets such as T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams, Robert Frost, H.D., Wallace Stevens, and Marianne Moore broke with their predecessors to create the premises for literary innovation. "Make it new," Pound decreed. How new modern poetry really is, what legacy it carried over from the past and which innovations it bestowed upon everything that followed will be discussed in this seminar.
