Impromptu Writing: Write Away - Right Away (Group 1). Englisch B2.2 (Seminar)

Inhalt: Practice makes perfect, so it's time to write away - right away! If you find yourself suffering from procrastination, this weekly course is here to provide you with a much needed dose of motivation and inspiration. In our 90-minute weekly sessions, you will have the opportunity to actively participate in a variety of writing exercises and activities geared towards helping you to get black on white, develop your own writing style, and experiment with writing for various purposes - whether they are academic, professional, or creative. We will begin with shorter writing tasks in the initial sessions and progress to longer and more complex tasks by the end of the semester. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to train language-related competencies such as - but not limited to – expanding your vocabulary; perfecting written communication skills (e.g. sentence variation, transitions; developing a sprachgefühl for the English language (e.g. register, connotations, denotations). All of the writing assignments will take place during the weekly sessions, and you will receive feedback on your writing style as well as language usage. Ready to write away - right away?

Words and Beyond: Enhancing Your Vocabulary (Group 1) (Übung)

Inhalt: Do you find yourself dodging the dictionary, confounded by collocations, terrified by translation yet somehow in love with LEO? Perhaps you just feel overwhelmed by words and their wily ways. If you haven’t found your inner “word nerd” yet (and even if you have), this seminar will make a logophile (or maybe even a logomaniac) out of you. After a brief introduction to the perils of translation and the benefits of effective cross-referencing skills, subsequent course topics will include but are not limited to: eponyms; acronyms and initialisms; clippings and blends; connotations and denotations; homonyms, homophones, and homographs. Using a variety of cultural texts (e.g. lyrics/poetry, fiction and non-fiction, films and television series, etc.) as potential sources, you will begin collecting and selecting new words for practical as well as creative exercises. The ultimate objective is not only to learn how to work with words but also how to make them work for you.

Conversation Pieces: Cultivating Your Communicative Competence. Englisch ab B2 (Seminar)

Inhalt: A conversation piece is something unusual that stimulates discussion. In this course, I will select an object, a piece of flash-fiction/short-short story, images/works of art, or an incident/news event, etc. to encourage you to actively participate in various speaking activities. These include – but are not limited to – guided discussions, mini-debates, impromptu mini-presentations, drama games, and roleplays. Although you will primarily practice enhancing your speaking skills and increasing your active vocabulary, you will also have the opportunity to improve your reading, listening, and writing skills based on the selected weekly activity.

Dramarama: Communication and Creativity in Action. Englisch ab B2 (Seminar)

Inhalt: Interested in experimenting with creativity techniques, temporarily leaving your comfort zone, and simultaneously enhancing your communication skills? If that’s the case, then Dramarama is your workshop. In our 90-minute weekly sessions, you will have the opportunity to actively participate in process drama, improvisation and drama games as well as analyze and act out scenes from a variety of comic/dramatic pieces written for stage and screen. Additionally, you will benefit from exercises and activities focusing on language-related as well as personal competencies: * perfecting verbal communication skills (e.g. fluency, pronunciation, and enunciation) * refining non-verbal communication skills (e.g. paralanguage) * honing your sprachgefühl for the English language (e.g. register, connotations, denotations) * expanding your vocabulary and vocabulary learning techniques * broadening critical reading skills and cultural literacy * increasing your self-awareness, self-confidence, self-investment, and interpersonal savvy * overcoming stage fright Are you ready for some Dramarama?

A Way with Words - Away with Words: An Introduction to Creative Writing. Englisch B2.2 (Seminar)

Inhalt: Are you natural talent when it comes to creativity or are you still waiting to find the right 'source' - or should I say 'course' of inspiration? Are your ready to meander along the blurry borders between fact and fiction in order to tell a story even if it's a lie? And finally, do you have a way with words or are they still having their way with you? Then welcome to the world of creative thought and fiction: A Way with Words, Away with Words. In this seminar, you will encounter a variety of creative writing methods in generative workshops (e.g., catalytic creativity exercises for plotlines and character development) as well as responsive workshops (e.g., peer-editing and evaluation methods for constructive criticism). We will begin with microfiction (6-word stories, twitterature, drabbles) and then proceed to vignettes as well as sudden/flash fiction The objective involves not only examining and discussing these various forms of short fiction, but also experimenting with exercises in style and literary techniques. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to expand your vocabulary, develop a feeling for nuances in language (connotations, register), and effectively employ stylistic devices. Finally, you will learn to develop and refine a personal literary style. Note: After the initial introductory sessions, the seminar will be divided into to two parts: a group meeting during the first half of the seminar for readings and discussions as well as writing exercises, responsive workshops and/or individual appointments during the second half.
