Inhalt: Roughly 23 percent of Americans claim some degree of German ancestry or ethnic origin. This seminar will not only explore German-American history and immigration, but also the American perception of “Germanness” and the over 300 years of German-American influence on the religious, social, and cultural life in America.

Englisch/FSZ: African American Short Stories (Seminar)

Inhalt: In this survey course, students read and discuss a variety of short stories by James Baldwin, Ernest J. Gaines, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Terry McMillian, Toni Morrison, Z.Z. Packer, Richard Wright, Alice Walker, etc. Students will be introduced to African-American literary theory and gain practice analyzing the texts in terms of their literary, historical, and cultural significance.

Inhalt: Making significant contributions to contemporary American literature are a number of native authors whose works have their roots in the storytelling tradition of their respective tribes (Sherman Alexie, Thomas King, N. Scott Momaday, Leslie Marmon Silko, Louise Erdrich). Studying Native American literature requires an openness to experiences and events that have historically been pushed to the periphery of our cultural awareness. If successful, the seminar will be a contribution to the dialogue that has been challenging the literary canon in the United States and Canada for the past decades.

Inhalt: The first part of the 20th century was unarguably one of the most prolific eras for lyrics in the United States. It was a time when modernist poets such as T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, William Carlos Williams, Robert Frost, H.D., Wallace Stevens, and Marianne Moore broke with their predecessors to create the premises for literary innovation. "Make it new," Pound decreed. How new modern poetry really is, what legacy it carried over from the past and which innovations it bestowed upon everything that followed will be discussed in this seminar.

The diverse history of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland has led to very different cultural traditions.
