Inhalt: Inhalt der Veranstaltung ist Kognition, ein Schwerpunktthema der Allgemeinen Psychologie. Es geht dabei um ausgewählte Phänomene der Art und Weise, wie Menschen denken, dabei fokussieren, Informationen speichern und wieder abrufen, schlussfolgern und entscheiden.

Climate Protection in Germany and in the World (FSL) (Seminar)

Inhalt: Climate protection is playing an increasingly important role in international politics and also in Germany.. We organize an excursion to the Helmholtz Centrum Geesthacht and get a virtual excursion in the Volkswagen company in Wolfsburg, see the Working Plan. We will cover the scientific basis of climate change. What is Global Warming and what are its main impacts on daily life? How can we protect ourselves? What is mitigation and what does adaptation mean? We consider the tasks related to urban development. How can we create more and more green cities? How can you make transportation more sustainable? How can we make the use of sustainable energy even more effective? We will pay particular attention to the effects of the pandemic on environmental and climate protection. The international tendencies are very different.

Einführung in die Elektromobilität (Seminar)

Inhalt: Die Veranstaltung behandelt eine Einführung in das Thema der Elektromobilität. Zunächst werden einige Hintergründe und die Motivation bzw. die Notwendigkeit sowie die Begriffe zur Elektromobilität behandelt. Im Rahmen dieser Betrachtungen wird die Well-to-Wheel Analyse vorgestellt und ein kleiner Abriss zur Geschichte gegeben. Im Bereich der Elektrotraktion wird die spurgebundene und spurungebundene Traktion vorgestellt und besprochen sowie die Variationen hinsichtlich der Antriebe für die Traktion gegeben, wie z.B. Hybridantriebe. Um die Voraussetzungen für eine Mobilität via Elektrotraktion zu verstehen werden auch die technischen Komponenten sowie die Betriebsstrategie bezüglich dieser besprochen.

Estrategias para apoyar el desarrollo sostenible en Latino America (FSL) (Seminar)

Inhalt: This course focuses on a critical discussion of Latin America's sustainability. The use of natural resources in general, and particularly by multinational corporations, the impact of political instability, mining methods, land usage, deforestation, and so on. This course endeavors to critically analyses and reflect the Chemical, Agricultural, Mining and Pharmaceutical Industries and the links existent with the government politics and economics that are interwoven in the bare structure of Latin America society. ultimately, we will focus on the use of natural resources and waste issues in contrast to Germany. The course would be offered in form of lectures, aimed at provoking critical discussions in interdisciplinary groups, workshops, games and student presentations. The students are expected to research and propose strategies to support sustainable development in Latin America. The contributions of the students will be summarized, reciprocally peer-reviewed and the so-obtained summary submitted to a journal specializing in sustainability or published on the Internet.

Grundlagen des Wasserbaus (Vorlesung)

Inhalt: Die Ressource Wasser erfreut sich vielseitiger Nutzung. In dieser Veranstaltung werden zunächst Grundlagen wie der Wasserhaushalt der Erde, wasserwirtschaftliche und wasserbauliche Begriffe sowie die administrative Gliederung wasserwirtschaftlicher Planungen vermittelt. Darauf aufbauend werden sowohl die Nutzung kleiner und großer Fließgewässer als auch grundsätzliche Möglichkeiten des Hochwasserschutzes behandelt. Einen weiteren Schwerpunkt der Veranstaltung bildet der Küstenschutz, der aufgrund des Bevölkerungswachstums und des daraus resultierenden Siedlungsdruckes eine immer größere ökonomische, ökologische und gesellschaftliche Rolle einnimmt.

Our Present and Future Nature: An Analysis of the Book "Rambunctious Garden" by Emma Marris (FSL) (Seminar)

Inhalt: Emma Marris is one of the world's most innovative and perceptive environmental journalists, writing for foremost journals such as Nature, Wired, OnEarth and Conservation. Her 2011 book "Rambunctious Garden" is at the forefront of current conservation and restoration debate and thought about our present and future nature - to what extent do we need management of nature and what role does pristine nature play in our current Anthropocene? She starts the book this way: "We have lost a lot of nature in the past three hundred years - in both senses of the word lost. We have lost nature in the sense that much nature has been destroyed: where there was a tree, there is house; where there was a creek, there is a pipe and a parking lot [..]. But we have also lost nature in another sense. We have misplaced it. We have hidden it from ourselves. Our mistake has been thinking that nature is something "out there", far away. […] This dream of pristine wilderness haunts us. It blinds us." What kind of nature can we envisage and can we create for ourselves and for other organisms that we share this planet with? Come along and have your eyes opened to very new possibilities that are a hybrid of wilderness and management. We can have more nature than before, it just will not be the same as in the past. Key topics in the ten chapters in the book are: 1) Weeding the Jungle 2) The Yellowstone Model 3) The Forest Primeval 4) Radical Rewilding 5) Assisted Migration 6) Learning to Love Exotic Species 7) Novel Ecosystems 8) Designer Ecosystems 9) Conservation Everywhere 10) A menu of new goals. This course will cover all of these partly controversial topics and embed in current debate and discourse within the scientific and conservation/restoration community.

Regenerative agriculture and Agroecology: A critical perspective on new paradigms and techniques to conciliate food production and ecosystem restoration (FSL) (Vorlesung)

Inhalt: Agriculture is one of the major drivers of main sustainability issues such as biodiversity collapse, climate change, deforestation, reduction in freshwater resources and eutrophication (Campbell et al., 2019). This is rooted in farming practices with severe impacts on the ecosystems, such as the high use of artificial inputs (mineral fertilizer, pesticides), heavy tillage, simplification of the landscape and industrial animal husbandry. Pioneer farmers have developed alternatives agricultural systems for more than 30 years. Organic agriculture, agroecological systems, permaculture or regenerative agriculture, are being more and more promoted, putting forward agricultural practices producing food without or with minimal use of tillage, pesticides and mineral fertilizers. Yet, their ability to feed a growing population is set in question by many actors of the food system. With this course, I will (1) take the students through the origin of the conventional agriculture systems, their benefits and limits. (2) I will then present the paradigms underlying the alternative models that are proposed today, with a focus on regenerative agriculture and agroecology. (3) I will provide the students with the basic knowledge on the functioning of agroecosystems and food systems to enable them understanding in a critical way the debates around the different agricultural models. (4) Then, I will explain the practices promoted in regenerative/agroecological agriculture. (5) Finally, I will facilitate discussions among the students, based on their own research, on critical questions regarding these alternative agricultural models.

Sustainable Mobility of the Future (FSL) (Seminar)

Inhalt: Mobility has been intensively changing in the last 1,5 years. The Pandemic led to a crisis in the international mobility. Additionally, the election of the new government in Germany causes a new situation. in the mobility. We will live with rapidly sinking international combustion and more and more increasing electric and alternative driving technologies. We organize an excursisn to the Helmholtz Centrum Geesthacht and get a virtual excursion in the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg, see the Working plan. The seminar focuses on the new technologies in the mobility in Germany. Parallel, we consider the tendencies in other continents and other regions.We analyse the future of the road mobility, the aviation and the ship technology. Beside them, we focus on the environment and climate protection, especially in the future mobility. How can we support the sustainable production of hydrogen? How can we improve the battery technology? What is the state of the art in car sharing and how can we introduce it in the mobility?

Von Menschenzoos bis Instagramm, Twitter, YouTube, TicTok… – Von Vitrinen-Menschen zur digitalen Identität? (Seminar)

Inhalt: Die Zusammenstellung im Titel erscheint unverschämt, denn was haben entwürdigende Ausstellungen des Menschen mit den heutigen sozialen Medien zu tun? „Freakshows“, Sideshows, Völkerschauen, ausgestopfte „Wilde“ in wissenschaftlichen Museen, sie dienten zwar der Unterhaltung und dem ökonomischen Gewinn. Doch auch die Wissenschaften waren an vorderster Stelle daran beteiligt: Ethnologen, Anthropologen, Mediziner u.v.m. brachten die Menschen – die, wie es heißt, freiwillig kamen – nach Europa, um an ihnen Beobachtungen und Vermessungen anzustellen, deren Daten wiederum für Entwicklungs- und Normierungsskalen genutzt wurden. Die Menschen kamen vielleicht freiwillig, doch konnten sie erahnen, in welche Strukturen sie hineingeraten würden und die ihnen in vielen Fällen den Tod brachten? Die Gewalttätigkeit dieser Veranstaltungen ist heute bekannt. Inwiefern das Wissen (das damals das Vorgehen im Namen des Fortschritts legitimierte) überholt und kritisch reflektiert worden ist, bleibt noch zu befragen. Noch heute sprechen Museen vom „wissenschaftlichen Gewinn“ bezüglich der aufbewahrten Körper und lösen damit die Verbindung von Wissen und Gewalt. Die Aggressivität des Sammelns und Ausstellens im Namen des Wissens schwindet dann scheinbar. In den sozialen Medien stellen sich Menschen ebenfalls freiwillig aus. Und auch darüber gibt es unlängst kritische Stimmen über negative Wirkungen. Doch reichen diese wenigen Ähnlichkeiten aus, um sie mit den Ausstellungen des Menschen in Zoos und Circusse in Verbindung zu bringen? Dieser Frage wollen wir uns im Seminar widmen und dabei vor allem die Zusammenhänge von Wissen und Gewalt, von Normierungen, Körperbildern und Macht herausarbeiten. Und gibt es vielleicht doch eine historische Konstante des Wissens, die die im Titel genannte Verbindung erlaubt?

Wie funktioniert das Internet? (Seminar)

Inhalt: Was passiert, wenn ich eine E-Mail versende? Wie kommt eine Website auf mein Handy? Wir alle nutzen das Internet - doch wie funktioniert das eigentlich? In dieser Veranstaltung geht es darum zu verstehen, wie das Netz arbeitet, einschliesslich der Implikationen für Privatsphäre und die Datensicherheit. Im seminaristischer Form erarbeiten die Teilnehmer verschiedene, in einander greifende Themen und erschliessen so den Gesamtkomplex. Diskussion. Auch Software-Tools zur technischen Analyse von Rechnernetzen werden im Rahmen der Veranstaltung behandelt.
