Empirical Research Project - A question of time: Working time issues, work stress, and recovery (Seminar)

Inhalt: The course "Empirical Research Project - Work and Non-Work Time" will enable students to experience all steps of a research process in applied psychology research, addressing a research question within the topic "A question of time: Working time issues, work stress, and recovery". Topic: Working time is a hot topic: New laws force organisations to track their employees' working time, the EU discusses a right for non-availability during non-work time, the idea of a 4-day-work-week is hotly debated, and the COVID-19 pandemic brought a huge shift in working time flexibility initiatives. In this empirical research project seminar, we will examine research questions centering around questions regarding working time and their relation to job attitudes, well-being, and performance. Different, self-chosen research questions can be addressed within this empirical research project, such as the effects of supplemental work during non-work time on employees' well-being, job stress recovery, and performance; or the effects of idle time at work. Course: This course consists of the following 10 parts: (1) discussing relevant literature of work psychology and organizational behavior research, (2) identifying a research question, (3) deriving hypotheses, (4) getting to know research designs in applied work psychology, (5) applying an experience sampling design, (6) implementing and conducting an empirical research project using the experience sampling method, (7) collecting field data, (8) analysing the data using SPSS or R, (9) evaluating the results, and (10) presenting the findings.
Empirical Research Project - Social Cognition A (Seminar)

Inhalt: In small groups, students will dive into different areas of social cognition by running their own experiments. Our goal is to investigate processes underlying different societal-relevant phenomena and constructs, such as human imitation, belief in free will or trust in science — to name just a few examples. This course consists of the following 10 parts: (1) discussing relevant empirical literature of social and cognitive psychology, (2) identifying a research question, (3) deriving hypotheses, (4) getting to know research designs in applied psychology, (5) applying an empirical research design, (6) implementing and conducting an empirical research project, (7) collecting data, (8) analyzing the data, (9) evaluating the results, and (10) presenting the findings.

Inhalt: The course "Empirical Research Project - Hybrid Work Models" will enable students to experience all steps of a research process in applied psychology, adressing a question within the topic "Virtual reality as a work tool: potentials, performance and acceptance" Topic: The technologies around virtual reality are currently evolving rapidly and it seems a likely scenario that in the foreseeable future the functionality will be so good that virtual reality will offer a real alternative to real office environments. In this empirical research project seminar, we will examine research questions centering around the potentials, performance and acceptance of using virtual reality technology for work processes in comparison to real office environments. Different self-chosen research questions can be adressed within this empirical research project, such as the differences in task performance between work scenarios in virtual reality and real office environments or the general acceptance to use virtual reality for different work tasks.
