Inhalt: How to foster community impact? What makes a community resilient? Who needs to engage in climate adaptation action? This transdisciplinary community impact research project focuses on the intersection of climate resilience, communities and social innovations. The setting of the project is Grenada, a Small Island State in the Southern Caribbean (Lesser Antilles) in which communities face continuous challenges to adapt to changing climatic conditions and threats to their livelihoods. In their quest to become ‘climate resilient communities’, Islanders in the Caribbean are currently struggling to mitigate and adapt to changing climatic conditions and impactful catastrophes, such as hurricanes, earthquakes and the pandemic. Building on results generated in the previous two years, student teams will focus on co-creating solution-oriented transferable knowledge for a local community living in a marine-protected area. A concrete entrepreneurial training interventions will be implemented with student mentors (on-site) and regional partners, for example the GIZ Team on St.Lucia.
Advanced Perspectives on M&E: Global Scaling Challenge (Seminar)
Dozent/in: Elke Schüßler
Inhalt: The Global Scaling Challenge is an international student competition about real-life firms that currently face the challenge of scaling globally. Student teams will develop, present, and discuss their suggestion for a scaling strategy with the entrepreneurs and an expert jury. Find more information here: https://gsc.mgt.unm.edu/ Student teams are coached to compete in developing a scaling solution to real-world cases. In doing so, the course revisits key concepts of entrepreneurship such as business models, growth and scaling strategies and discusses their practical application. What’s in it for you? As a student of IBAE you can compete with teams from around the globe and your input can make a real difference for the participating firms. You will be given mentorship and hence can develop your knowledge and skills in addressing real-life entrepreneurial challenges. Additionally, successful student teams can win a share of the price money. Note that this course takes place outside of the regular semester cycle. The regional qualifier event is on March 14, and the main part of the course will take place before this date to coach the students. Thus, students have to be prepared to work intensively during February and March. Usually, there is a short time between the presentation date and the publication of the case materials - this time pressure is part of the challenge. So any student planning longer absences in February and March 2025 should not register for this course! Key Dates February 17, 2025: Student teams have to register with their names February 19, 2025: Case materials will be distributed March 14, 2025: Regional qualifier event Europe/Africa April 4, 2025: Global Scaling Challenge Finals Note that only two teams of 4 students each can participate in the challenge. This means that, depending on group size, there will most likely be an internal pre-selection process. Regardless, all students will benefit by learning from each other as well as the winning teams. If demanded, the preparatory classes can be partially held online.
Advanced Perspectives on M&E: Grand Challenges & Citizen Entrepreneurship (Seminar)
Dozent/in: Leonie Anika Eising
Termin:
Einzeltermin | Di, 08.04.2025, 08:15 - Di, 08.04.2025, 11:45 | C 40.154 Seminarraum
14-täglich | Dienstag | 08:15 - 11:45 | 14.04.2025 - 29.04.2025 | C 14.201 Seminarraum | C 14.201
14-täglich | Dienstag | 08:15 - 11:45 | 27.05.2025 - 11.07.2025 | C 14.201 Seminarraum | C 14.201
Inhalt: As the world faces growing grand challenges, such as climate change, resource scarcity, armed conflicts and many more, one approach to tackle these challenges may be “active citizenship“. The idea is that every citizen makes use of his or her skills and put them to work in a meaningful way to explore new ways of addressing social problems. If these citizen activists organize themselves in a business-like structure to achieve a certain goal, we speak of "citizen entrepreneurship". Using tools as online networking, private-public partnerships, corporate engagement or social entrepreneurship, these entrepreneurs strive for sustainable, systemic solutions in their community. Rather than short-term fixes and hand-me-down charity, they aim to build empowering communities and impactful organizations rather than fostering dependency. In this course, you learn about citizen entrepreneurship with guest lectures, by using examples, discussing case studies, and performing a (practical) assignment: You can either find out how much citizen entrepreneurship lies within you and your ecosystem by looking at a citizen initiative you are involved in already, or you explore an existing "external" citizen entrepreneurship initiative and its ecosystem in-depth to enrich the research field. How much potential does citizen entrepreneurship have for solving grand challenges? What are the advantages and disadvantages of the concept? Together we will find out. Citizen Entrepreneurship encompasses citizens' inclusion, integration, and engagement in the entrepreneurial process. As a conceptual framework, it represents a comprehensive view of how individuals within a community or society participate in entrepreneurship beyond the traditional profit-driven model. Citizen entrepreneurs create economic and social value by addressing local problems (e.g., in a city), often resulting from unsustainable development. The concept includes elements of, e.g., social or sustainable entrepreneurship, but it is not yet widely researched and represented in the literature.

Einzeltermin | Do, 17.04.2025, 10:15 - Do, 17.04.2025, 11:45 | C 40.146 Seminarraum
Inhalt: According to various experts, leadership has been heralded frequently as an important source for a sustained competitive advantage on the part of organizations. Yet, in very recent times, many people have become cynical about existing leaders in both public and private sectors. Nevertheless, it is clear from research that the display of effective leader behaviors are requirements for individuals attempting to progress in managerial positions in their careers. As such, it is important for aspiring managers to learn about the nature of effective leadership practices and how they can develop their own competencies in this area. Thus, this course deals with leadership ideas such as leader-follower dyads, group organizing across levels and also beyond an organizational boundary. Both traditional aspects of leadership are discussed, as well as more recently emerging concepts, such as transformational and socially responsible leadership.
