CCS Colloquium: “Edmundo Torres’ China Diabla performance. On the syncretism of contemporary art” – Sebastián Eduardo Dávila
19. Nov
6:15 pm, C40.601
This presentation centers the concept of religious syncretism to engage with mask maker and dancer Edmundo Torres’ China Diabla performance as a practice of contemporary art. Chinas Diablas are female devils from the Andes, brought to life during Catholic festivities like Carnival. I will reflect on the terms syncretism and contemporary art, looking at Torres’ 1994 performance during the closing event of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s famous covering of the German parliament. My presentation builds the first case study from my postdoctoral project on syncretism and contemporary art of the Americas. For further information see: https://trafo.hypotheses.org/51954
