Katherine Gibson: Postcapitalist Community Economies Here and Now: Sowing the Seeds of Transformative Futures
01. Jul
LIAS Senior Fellow Katherine Gibson (Western Sydney University) presents her research on the ‘Diverse Economy’ in this LIAS Lecture
Date: Tuesday, 1st July 2025, 6:00–8:00 pm
Location: Lecture Hall 4
Katherine Gibson’s research over the last few decades has focused on inventorying and activating ethical economic wellbeing with communities around the world. It has been underpinned by a feminist critique of capitalocentrism—that is, the discourse that dominates thinking and action around ‘the Economy’ and ‘the Environment’. In today’s world it is hard to escape the increasingly devastating realities of human exploitation and extractivism. And for this very reason it is all the more important to bring to visibility other ways of living that enact ethical practices of care, mutual aid, reciprocity and sharing. But to have any transformative effect, this visibility must be supported by theoretical insight and collective action. In this lecture I will outline the Diverse Economies Research Project and the work of the international Community Economies Research Network, highlighting the central role of anti-essentialism, uncertainty and joy in our practice.
