Research Environment

Leuphana University Lüneburg is a lively, innovative model university in Lower Saxony, situated within the metropolitan area of Hamburg, with around 10.000 students and 180 professors. The university has a unique inter- and transdisciplinary approach and follows the model of liberal education. The university consists of 5 schools: Management and Technology, Education, Public Affairs, Humanities and Social Studies, Sustainability.

Individual research projects are completed by and at various centers and collaborative research projects. The LIAS in Culture and Society is closely connected to the recently founded Center for Critical Studies (CCS), to the Center for Digital Cultures (CDC), as well as to the Center for the Study of Democracy (ZDEMO).

The university prepares an application for a cluster of excellence with the title "Disruption and Transformation: The Epochal Signature of 21st Century". In addition to the regular guest lectures at the university, there will be numerous lectures and workshops with international guests within this topic area starting in the fall of 2022.

At graduate level, Leuphana is home of the PhD-training group "Cultures of Critique", a program funded by the German Research Foundation devoted to scenes, practices and forms of critique from interdisciplinary perspectives. International researchers funded by the Mercator Foundation are also part of the PhD training group. In 2023, the newly founded doctoral college "Law and Societal Transformation" funded by Joachim Herz Foundation will begin its work.

Moreover, the university's gender and diversity research network hosts numerous guest lectures, reading groups, and workshops.

Leuphana University is one of the very few universities in Germany which has its own project- and exhibition space for contemporary art: the Kunstraum.
