Hannah Arendt: Ein Glossar für das Leben in finsteren Zeiten (Seminar)

Inhalt: Hannah Arendt gilt als exemplarisches Beispiel dafür, wie man in „finsteren Zeiten“ ein kritisches Denken gegen den Strom entfalten kann. Verfolgt, ausgeschlossen und ausgewandert, entwickelt sie eine Philosophie, deren Grundlage vom Begriff der Geburt gebildet ist. In dieser Perspektive ist jeder Akt des Handelns oder des Sprechens als eine Art neue Geburt gesehen. Ob Arendt sich mit politischen Themen, mit dem Wesen der Philosophie oder mit Literatur, Sprache bzw. Dichtung beschäftigt, lehnt sie jede Denkweise ab, die sich als stumpfsinnig und einfältig herausstellt. Der „Willen zu verstehen“ orientiert ihr Denken. Während des Seminars werden wir uns mit Texten auseinandersetzen, in denen Arendt das Denken als Form des Widerstands herausarbeitet. Daraus soll eine Art Glossar entstehen, um in finsteren Zeiten zu überleben.

The adventures of desire. Bodies, lives, insurrections in contemporary philosophy and politics (Seminar)

Inhalt: Is there a desire for something that goes beyond capitalism? With this question, Mark Fisher opened his last and unfinished lectures. In this seminar, we will take up and explore Fisher's question. What is the relationship between emancipation politics and desire? And between sexuality, culture and civilisation? And between body and politics? In this way, we will return to reflect on one of the issues that have crossed psychoanalysis, political philosophy and contemporary critical theory. Initially, we will focus on selected readings and presentations from some of Sigmund Freud's texts and some of his critics (in particular, Herbert Marcuse). We will continue by delving deeper into the debate on libidinal economy in France, and then approach the queer issue in its link with politics. A special space will be dedicated to the discussion of Mark Fisher's unfinished political-theoretical proposal.

Theorien des Neuen Autoritarismus (Seminar)

Inhalt: In den letzten Jahren lässt sich eine deutliche Rückkehr autoritärer Tendenzen in der westlichen Welt beobachten: Regime, die stark hierarchisch organisiert sind – oft mit einer Führerpersönlichkeit an der Spitze –, die Rechtsstaatlichkeit und Meinungsfreiheit einschränken und gezielt Feindbilder mobilisieren. Parallel dazu rücken auch autoritäre Persönlichkeitsstrukturen in den Fokus: ein stereotypes Denken, Empfänglichkeit für Verschwörungstheorien, Ressentiment, Kontrolle und Gewaltbereitschaft. Im Seminar wollen wir diese neuen Formen des Autoritarismus theoretische untersuchen: Inwiefern sind diese wirklich neu und wo bestehen Kontinuitäten zu klassischen Formen des Autoritarismus? Welche Rolle spielt der Plattformkapitalismus für die Herausbildung autoritärer Strukturen? Wie hängt der Autoritarismus mit der drohenden Klimakrise zusammen? Dazu werden wir sowohl klassische Theorien des Autoritarismus (voraussichtlich u.a.: Theodor W. Adorno et al, Hannah Arendt, Erich Fromm, Leo Löwenthal) als auch zeitgenössische Positionen (voraussichtlich u.a.: Carolin Amlinger & Oliver Nachtwey, Cara New Daggett, Geoff Mann & Joel Wainwright, Peter E. Gordon, Joseph Vogl) lesen und diskutieren.

Walter Benjamin’s Illuminations (Seminar)

Inhalt: Some weeks before his death escaping from Nazism, Walter Benjamin entrusts his last manuscript to his friend Hannah Arendt, telling her to save it as it is more important than his own life. The text appears 1968 in the book Illuminations, the first anthology of Benjamin’s essays published in English and edited by Arendt. With this provocative title she wants to present Benjamin as one of the few intellectuals of the 20th century who was able to “enlighten” those “Dark Times”, which doesn’t seem yet to have come to an end. With his prophetic gaze Benjamin was not only offering a deep analysis on his own times, but also anticipating a series of tendencies, which found their concretisation only in the 21st century. His disruptive reflection on the origin of modernity, the destruction of tradition, the arise of capitalism, the role of technology in our society, the uses of images as political instruments are only a few examples of the novelty and the freshness of Benjamin’s thinking. His oeuvre is an immense source for finding new concepts to decipher our times. During the seminar we will be reading some of Benjamin’s most important essays as well as looking for his legacy both in contemporary philosophy and artistic practices. Following this perspective, “Benjamin’s Illuminations” should be read also as a kind of compass for orienting ourselves in present times.
