Inhalt: Are you a Comma-kaze? Is your modifier dangling and the others won’t tell you? Do vampires teach register? These questions and grammar points as well as many more will be covered in the class. Correct grammar equals correct speaking. That is why a strong emphasis is placed on applying grammatic prinicples. Pop culture, music, youtube and other media are used to make grammar interesting.

Pronunciation and Presentations. B2.1 (Seminar)

Inhalt: Although you do not need perfect pronunciation for presentations or conversations, a certain amount of proficiency is needed. Adequate pronunciation, prosody and correctness will; however, greatly improve how people understand you. The best way to attain this is by practicing in a low to no stress environment. In this course students will work on their fluency and pronunciation and will be shown tricks and tips to help them improve their presentations.

Language, Culture and Communication Meets Science Fiction (FSL) (Seminar)

Inhalt: Science Fiction can be seen as a useful sociological thought experiment. After all It isn’t possible or ethical to use people as lab rats; however, science fiction allows us to do just that without harming people. Through the genre we can see if a language helps form the culture or the culture forms the language. Additionally, communication and how it is used within different societies can reflect not only society but also the individual. Various examples of language, culture and communication will be used to highlight science fiction and society. After a brief introduction to this genre students will apply various theories to specific literature, film and TV shows and will discuss and further develop what they discover. Finally students will reflect on how their use of language and culture influences their communication.

Tandem: Language Experience and Intercultural Skills (Seminar)

Inhalt: This course is for both native and non-native speakers. This is the last time this course will be offered. The main focus is on cultural and societal exchange. This course will be conducted bilingually (dt/eng). In these tandems you will discuss social and cultural knowledge and your experiences in your culture. Learning German is not the main focus of the seminar, but students can practice a little German with their partner. Tandem partners will be set up in the second meeting so please make sure you are there. As tandem is an autonomous form of learning, students are responsible for planning, managing and maintaining their own learning process. This applies not only to time management and motivation, but also to the selection of suitable topics and the ability to reflect on their own progress with the help of corrections and feedback from their learning partner. There are only 2 group meetings. For all other meetings, partners choose the time and place to meet. 1 Meeting: Tandem method introduced and practiced. Additional credit points can be earned if so wished. 2. Meeting: Tandem partners are matched
