Border Crossings: Exploring North American Culture (Seminar)

Inhalt: Imagine this seminar as an exercise in border crossings in which we will embark upon figurative journeys to several thematic realms in North American culture: Canadian-U.S. relations with an emphasis on identity construction and specific ethnic groups; gender, equality, and sexual politics as well as contemporary Native issues. We will explore these realms though literary and cinematic texts in conjunction with supporting theoretical readings. As a general framework, I would like to propose several overarching titles for these realms of exploration: "Encounters at the 49th Parallel: Crossing the Border or Crossing the Line?”; “Reclaiming the ‘F’ Word: The Many Faces of Feminism”, "The Immigrant Experience: Voices from the Margins," “Cultural Appropriation and (Mis)Representation of Native People." Ethnic Cultures of North America (Seminar)

Inhalt: In this seminar we will explore the different ethnic cultures of Canada and the United States which differ greatly from western thought in both their perception of reality and their assumption about literary creations. We will look at experiences of the indigenous populations (Native Americans, First Nations, Inuit, and Métis) as well as recent immigrants to the U.S., most nobably from Mexico. Our seminar will not only be an exploration of groups which have historically been pushed to the periphery of our cultural awareness, but also a contribution to the dialogue that has been challenging discourses both in the United States and Canada for the past decades.

Inhalt: This seminar is designed to provide students with an understanding of key terminology and readings in politics. In particular, students will learn how the election system in the U.S. functions and participate in an election project. Students will become a 'virtual citizen' of one U.S. state, an expert on its population, and predict how it is going to vote on Election Day. Students will also participate in Election Day festivities as well as reflect on the project and the U.S. election results.
