Systematic Theology and Ethics

The area of Systematic Theology and Ethics at Leuphana is devoted to the study of Christian thought and action in their complex interwovenness in human history and society. Dogmatics is traditionally understood as the study of Christian teaching or “doctrine”, while ethics investigates the nature and conditions of human action in relation to conceptions of value and the good and their cultivation. At Leuphana, we approach the interrelation of these fields via the lenses of theological ethics and religious ethics. In other words, what do the various Christian and other religious groups teach about how to live a good life, and what is the significance of these teachings and practices in the broader society?

Research

Special focus is devoted to:

  • The variety of Christian traditions in Germany and around the world and as well as their relationships with one another and with other religions (from dogmatic, ecumenical and intercultural-theological perspectives).
  • The development and complexity of Christianity in relation to social values, institutions, and transformations in pluralistic, global and digital societies.
  • The integration of big questions in theology and metaethics with current events and contexts of practice.
