In his LIAS Lecture “New UN guidelines on policies for eradicating xenophobia: a key tool for addressing growing challenges in current times”, Pablo Ceriani Cernadas introduces the new joint recommendations of the UN Committees on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) and on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families (CMW). These universal guidelines respond to one of today’s most pressing challenges: combating xenophobia and its harmful impact on migrants and societies. They provide concrete policy tools for states, parliaments, courts, local authorities, media, digital platforms, and civil society. Emphasis is placed on education policies, evidence-based narratives, and inclusive approaches aimed at dismantling discriminatory practices and harmful policy frameworks. Ceriani Cernadas will explain both the participatory drafting process and the core content of the guidelines. He will also discuss opportunities, action points, and challenges for effective implementation, highlighting their relevance for international, national, and local stakeholders.

Pablo Ceriani Cernadas is Professor of Migration and Human Rights at the National University of Lanus (Argentina) and a Member of the UN Committee on the Protection of the Rights of Migrant Workers. He is widely recognized as a leading expert on migration and human rights.
