Academic Writing (Übung)

Inhalt: Do you have a good command of academic vocabulary? Do you know how to write a proper introduction to a research paper? Or what strategies apart from the summary you can use for the conclusion? Do you know the difference between informal and formal English? Do you have a good idea of how to vary your sentence structure or integrate creative elements into your academic prose? Can you use commas effectively? If you have answered no to two or more of these questions, then this might be the course for you. Each participant will gain experience reading and responding to academic texts, working with a variety of reference works, and peer-editing. Students will be introduced to and practice using academic register and conventions. Finally, students will be encouraged to develop their own academic voices.

Inhalt: Disagreements and conflicts are prevalent constituents of our culture and play an important role in various domains. Understanding their role in different contexts contributes to a broader understanding of human culture and society. The seminar aims at introducing students to the practice of debating different opinions, be it in oral or written form. This should help them to develop skills of critical and argumentative reasoning in discussions, presentations or essays. Students will learn for example about standard debating formats, how to formulate and use arguments, and how to protocol and evaluate debates. Furthermore they will learn to present and defend a position on a topic.

Creative Writing: Poetry and Short Fiction (Übung)

Inhalt: Interested in awakening your creative spirit and discovering your potential for equally creative output? This seminar puts theory into practice by offering a variety of exercises to ignite ideas, experiment with literary styles and genres as well as give and receive constructive criticism in peer-editing sessions. This seminar will help you develop your own style and voice when writing poetry (including Haikus) and vignettes. In the end, students will have a portfolio (for lack of a better name), consisting of 2-3 Haikus, 2-3 vignettes, and 2-3 poems.

English for Social Occupations (Übung)

Inhalt: This course is intended as an opportunity for students to overcome fears of speaking and reading texts in the subject matter and will include short readings in English with seminar-style discussion to follow. Participation will be determined by comfort-level of individual students. The level of discussion and language used will be determined based upon the prior knowledge of students – no specific English level is expected or required upon entry or exit of the course.

Inhalt: The primary objective of this seminar is to introduce students to various ethical theories which will be applied to a variety of different realities, both factual and fictional. Students will be asked to analyze the social and moral implications of current issues, evaluate potential steps which can be taken to overcome problems, and analyze the efficiency of the discussed approaches in real and fictional contexts.
