Workshop "Analyzing Positionality – Exploring Research Topographies"

19. Jan

Where am I located in the landscape of knowledge and with regards to my research subject? Who and what is influencing my role and position in my research? What are main theoretical backgrounds my research relies on? Am I elaborating them profound enough? Are there any contradictions inherent to my research field? And how do the different methodologies fit together? These are questions that are often raised when research is realized in-between disciplines, in specialized fields of knowledge that are highly interdisciplinary or between different cultures of knowing and acting.
To a certain extent, any research that builds on different research traditions can be considered as the formation of a new topos in the landscape of knowledge. Differences lie in the way how this is achieved, whether it is formed by creating an inter-, trans- or undisciplined research field, or by expanding research objectives from solely epistemic towards action oriented, transformative or interventionist aims. Students and researchers are challenged to navigate the landscape of knowledge when forming their own research field, and to name and describe it against the background of the actual knowledge system. This workshops supports you in analyzing your own positionality and to identify key-coordinates, layers and boundaries of your research field. We will work with subjects, theories, methods, and persons, roles, interests involved in your research project. Focus and depth will be set according to the participants’ needs.
