Englisch/FSZ: English B2. Kommunikation im akademischen und beruflichen Kontext. Effective Communication in English (Seminar)

Inhalt: This course is intended for those who are curious about the different ways to communicate effectively in English in all sorts of contexts to a variety of people. Each participant will become familiar with different forms of communication, the job application process, and gain experience using technology as a communication and language learning tool. Students will give an interactive presentation in English, work with reference works, write an essay, a c.v., and a cover letter. Students will also be actively involved in the selection of some of the course topics.

Inhalt: This seminar takes a look at the social, political, and cultural themes in the United States during the 1960s and its impact on Great Britain in a turbulent time in history. We will examine selected topics in history and culture from multiple perspectives, analyzing both high and popular culture, mainstream and marginalized voices. The seminar will also discuss the late 1960s through the filter of David Lodge's novel, Changing Places. In this campus novel two professors, one from America and one from England, each take the other's position for half a year in 1969. Against the background of the student protest movements, free love, the beginning of feminism, Lodge makes fun of the culture clash and the academic world.

Inhalt: Der computerbasierte Quick Placement Test (QPT) dauert ca. 20-30 Minuten und prüft Hör- und Leseverständnis sowie Grammatik- und Wortschatzkenntnisse. Inhalt: In this seminar, we will delve into the many varieties of the English language as it is used in various countries across the globe, either as the colonial language or the unifying lingua franca. In cooperation with the instructor, students will be able to choose texts from cultures as diverse as the Caribbean, India and Pakistan, Mexican-American, as well as Native American and First Nations.
