"Happiness Research": An empirical approach towards the understanding of satisfaction and well-being of individuals and regions (Seminar)

Inhalt: Course description: This course is part of the complementary studies (Komplementärstudium “Medialitätsorientierte Zugänge zu den Sozialwissenschaften”). The teaching and examination language is German. But all materials (including slides, literature, online sources) are in English so that English speaking students will be able to follow the course (you can also answer the test and give the presentation in English). German speaking students must be able to deal with this English material and the German teaching language will help you with that. Although “Happiness research” is interdisciplinary and empirically driven, the course has a focus on the literature from economics. But no specific knowledge from economics or econometrics is necessary for the course. The first part of the course is lecture-based and gives an introduction to happiness research, its use for science and policy as well as some conceptional issues. Moreover, students are shown with real world data for Germany how aggregated happiness statistics are generated and how regression analyses are conducted in a statistical software package. The first part concludes with some examples from the economics literature about the impact of income, inflation, unemployment, conspicuous consumption, floods and droughts, air pollution, and terrorism on individual satisfaction and well-being. As part of the combined examination (KWA), students have to write a short test (45 minutes) about the first part, which accounts for 70% of the total grade. In the second part of the course, students have to present “Happiness Reports” in groups, which also compare nations and regions. Whereas the “World Happiness Reports” are more explicitly related to happiness and satisfaction, the OECD reports “How’s life? Measuring well-being” take a broader perspective on well-being, of which satisfaction is only one measure. Each group (4-6 students) has to present one report in one session (approx. 60-70 minutes + discussion in class) with a short introduction and conclusion; but the main focus should be on the presentation of the chapters about specific topics. The jointly graded group presentations account for 30% of the total individual grade. Please see the course outline and material for more information.

Business model design and innovation (FSL) (Seminar)

Inhalt: Starting from the mid 1990s, the concept of business models has attracted the attention of scholars and practitioners alike. Today, business models have become an integrated management concept. This course will provide students with insights into the nature of business models and their role as a source of innovation. Dealing with academic literature and real-life cases, students will get an understanding of the designs, processes and instruments of business models and business model innovation. The course employs a combination of lectures and in-class discussions. As part of the examination, students will have to apply their theoretical knowledge to real-life cases. The results of the group work will be presented and discussed in class. Following that, students will be asked to write reports reflecting the case.

Einführung in das Islamische Recht (Seminar)

Inhalt: Die Vorlesung soll einen ersten Eindruck vermitteln von den kulturellen, religiösen und historischen Grundlagen des Islamischen Rechts. Ebenso soll auf die Besonderheiten des Islamischen Rechts gegenüber den bekannten "westlichen" Rechtssystemen und seiner heutigen Bedeutung in islamisch geprägten Staaten eingegangen werden. Um den Einstieg zu erleichtern werden einführend die Grundkenntnisse über die Pflichten der Muslime und die Hauptquellen der Islamischen Religion vorgestellt. Diesbezüglich soll auch auf die Rolle der Frau im Islam näher nachgegangen werden. Das Angebot richtet sich an Alle, die einen grundlegenden Einblick in das islamische Recht gewinnen wollen, sei es aus rechtsvergleichendem Interesse oder mit Blick auf die Bedeutung islamischer Rechtsnormen für das Internationale Privatrecht, aber auch z.B. an Student(inn)en der Politik-, der Religions- oder der Kulturwissenschaften. Der Kurs ist für Student(inn)en aller Fachrichtungen interessant, die in interkulturellen oder internationalen Zusammenhängen tätig werden wollen.

Handling ethical dilemmas in corporate decision-making (FSL) (Seminar)

Inhalt: The course explores how to navigate ethical decision-making in the workplace. Professionals frequently encounter complex decision contexts in which they are confronted with ethical dilemmas (i.e., situations in which no decision alternative leads to an acceptable outcome). This course introduces philosophical theories that help guide ethical decision-making and develops concepts to deal with these complex situations in practice. The course employs a combination of lectures and in-class discussions. Thereby, students will apply their theoretical knowledge from the lectures to contemporary real-life cases in the business context (group work).

Inhalt: L’endiguement de l’influence française en Afrique francophone : La résurrection des Coup d’Etat dans les pays d’Afrique francophone. Alors que l’on croyait que l’Afrique était bien partie pour l’enracinement des régimes politiques démocratiques, malheureusement depuis quelques années, on assiste à un changement inconstitutionnel des gouvernements à travers des coups d’Etat militaires doublé à un discours anti- français. Au regard de cette situation l’on est en droit de se poser la question de savoir ce qui peut justifier la résurgence de la prise de pouvoir par les forces armées ? Qu’est- ce qui justifier la collision des pouvoir africains et le gouvernement français ? Quel rôle joue les pays tels que la Russie, la chine ? Doit- on s’attendre à une reconfiguration des zones d’influence en Afrique ? L’objectif de ce séminaire sera de montrer aux étudiants les liens qui lient les pays dit d’Afrique francophones à la France. Dans un deuxième moment, nous nous attarderons sur les éléments sur lesquels repose la contestation de la coopération entre l’Afrique et la France, ainsi que les jeux et les enjeux des nouvelles puissances.

Managing Interorganizational Relations (FSL) (Seminar)

Inhalt: Managing interorganizational relations (IOR) has become an important topic in practice as well as in research. This course focuses on different forms of dominantly collaborative IOR such as strategic alliances and networks, regional networks and clusters, global supply chains, cross-sectoral partnerships, and project and innovation networks. After introducing different theoretical perspectives for understanding IOR (economic, institutional, practice-based), the course will focus on management practices such as selection, allocation, regulation and evaluation regarding topics pertinent to managing IOR, such as: - initiation, maintenance and ending of IORs; - managing tensions such as between cooperation and competition or trust and control; - designing the interface between internal organizational structures and IORs, often conceptualized as boundary spanning; - governing IOR.

Migration and Asylum Policy in the European Union (FSL) (Seminar)

Inhalt: International migration is often considered one of the major global challenges of our time. In the European Union (EU), asylum and migration policy is today not only a competence of the individual EU member states but also a task of the EU and its institutions. Over the past 20 years or so, the EU has built a legal and political framework for the management of international migration including refugee flows, a framework which is gradually moving from setting minimum norms towards more directly applicable and binding rules and systems. This seminar aims to review, analyse and critically reflect this development. The scope of the seminar comprises both migration for protection and humanitarian purposes, irregular or 'mixed' migration flows and 'legal' migration for purposes such as work, studies or family reunification, and how these migration flows are regulated. Both domestic (national) dimensions of migration and asylum policy, EU dimensions and external dimensions can be covered. While focusing on policies and legal frameworks to regulate international migration and on the behaviour and interests of political actors in the EU, activities of non-governmental actors and civil society can also be studied and discussed. Overall, the seminar aims at examining and identifying the objectives and the potential added value of the Europeanisation of asylum and migration policy as well as the shortcomings and inconsistencies of this process.

Inhalt: Viele Ausprägungen der „New Work – Neuen Arbeit“ sind der Arbeitsrechtsordnung bislang eher fremd und rütteln nicht selten an dessen Kompatibilität mit der modernen Arbeitswelt. Dennoch lassen sich viele Problemstellungen, die zwangsläufig mit den Erscheinungsformen neuer Arbeit einhergehen, ohne Grundwissen und Verständnis des rechtlichen Rahmens und der Grundprinzipien des Rechts nicht lösen. In diesem Modul werden einführend Grundlagen des Rechts dargestellt und darauf aufbauend der arbeitsrechtliche Rahmen von New Work er-örtert sowie analysiert. Exemplarische Fragestellungen der Unterneh-menspraxis werden mit Schwerpunkt auf Zusammenarbeit und Konflikt-lösung von Arbeitgeber/Führungskräften und Betriebsrat/Beschäftigten problem- und lösungsorientiert bearbeitet und verschiedene im Recht und in der Rechtspraxis bewährte Methoden erprobt und eingesetzt.

Reichsbürger:innen zwischen Konservatismus, Verschwörungsideologie und Rechtsextremismus (Seminar)

Inhalt: Das Seminar widmet sich dem aktuellen Phänomenbereich sogenannter Reichsbürger:innen und geht der grundlegenden Frage nach, wie diese aus soziologischer Perspektive zu fassen und einzuordnen sind. In einem ersten Schritt diskutieren wir vorliegende Analysen und Einordnungen aus Wissenschaft und Journalismus, welche sich mit unterschiedlichen Begrifflichkeiten, theoretischen Bezugsrahmen und empirischen Zugängen dem Themenkomplex nähern. Dies ermöglicht uns, das Phänomen Reichsbürger:innen als exemplarisches Brennglas zu betrachten, anhand dessen wir uns in einem zweiten Teil des Seminars mit angrenzenden Phänomenbereichen vertraut machen wollen. In diesem Kontext beschäftigen wir uns unter anderem mit den Konzepten Konservatismus, Verschwörungsideologie und Rechtsextremismus und fragen nach potenziellen Schnittmengen und Abgrenzungen. Im dritten Block des Seminars bietet sich die Möglichkeit, die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse auf empirisches Material aus dem Forschungsprojekt „Alltag im Dissens – Eine Studie zum Gebrauch (imaginären) Rechts durch Reichsbürger:innen“ anzuwenden. In Werkstattsitzungen erproben wir in Grundzügen verschiedene Instrumente qualitativ-empirischer Sozialforschung und erlernen, diese selbstständig auf den Gegenstandsbereich anzuwenden. Damit bietet das Seminar nicht nur Gelegenheit zur kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit einem gesellschaftspolitisch aktuellen Thema, sondern schafft darüberhinausgehend Raum zur reflektierten Auseinandersetzung mit qualitativer Forschungspraxis.

Was ist Populismus? Und warum? (Seminar)

Inhalt: Populismus wird wie Ideologie und Mundgeruch üblicherweise Anderen nachgesagt, selten meint man damit sich selbst. Populistisch werden politische Parteien, Bewegungen und Politiker*innen genannt, aber auch Forderungen, Aussagen oder Stile können „populistisch“ sein. Es soll ihn von links wie von rechts geben, er kann als autoritär oder volksnah gelten. Wie kaum ein anderer sozialwissenschaftlicher Begriff prägt er Debatten im politischen Geschäft wie im Alltagsleben. Schon vor zwanzig Jahren identifizierte der Politikwissenschaftler Cas Mudde einen „populistischen Zeitgeist“. Er scheint bis heute anzuhalten. Was bedeutet die anhaltende Hochkonjunktur des Begriffs „Populismus“? Welche politischen, sozialen und kulturellen Phänomene werden damit bezeichnet? Was wird mit dem Begriff gemacht, zu welchen Zwecken wird er eingesetzt und welche Effekte hat sein Einsatz? Taugt der Begriff zur Beschreibung und zum Verständnis gegenwärtiger Dynamiken, erhellt oder verstellt er unsere Sicht auf sie?

Where No Man Has Gone Before: Women and Science Fiction (FSL) (Seminar)

Inhalt: What can social science fiction tell us about society? How can this genre - whose roots lie in pulp fiction - shed light on a variety of social issues? How can you create a collaborative novella? These and other questions will be examined in this seminar. Students will read excerpts of social science fiction and investigate how this genre presents a critique of social conditions. In order to do this, students will acquire a knowledge of and apply various theories to analyze social aspects of select short stories and/or excerpts. In addition to the theoretical introduction, students will create a collaborative science fiction novella applying all the principles discussed in class. A collaborative novella is a group effort so students who take this class must be there on specific days. Please check the syllabus in myStudy to make sure you can be there.
