Relations in Space

Visualization of Small(est) Topographic Structures

The aim of the joint project “RiR – Relationen im Raum” (“Relations in Space”) is the analysis and visualization of spatial relations between gravestones of Jewish cemeteries from nine centuries (11th to 20th century). Based on concrete research questions and in an exchange among the involved cultural scholars and computer scientists, a “Topography Visualizer” is to be developed that enables the analysis of different cemetery ensembles. The research association brings together partners from various cultural sciences—Judaism / Jewish studies, civil engineering, architecture, art studies, and history dedicated to the research and investigation of numerous historical cemeteries in successfully completed or ongoing projects—with partners from computer science who have extensive experience with visualization and the infrastructure projects DARIAH-DE and TextGrid. The interdisciplinary joint research project RiR is funded from August 2012 through July 2015 by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in the frame of the so-called "eHumanities " line of funding (funding code: 01UG1243A-C).
