Englisch/FSZ: Englisch C1. Kommunikation im akademischen und beruflichen Kontext. Thesis Workshop (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Sigrid Pearson

Termin:
wöchentlich | Montag | 08:15 - 11:45 | 18.10.2010 - 04.02.2011 | C 16.203 Seminarraum

Inhalt: Academic writing requires precise and clear expression while presenting complex arguments or explaining highly technical data and results. Add the challenge of writing in another language, and not surprisingly many students seek extra support when writing a thesis or paper in English. This course aims to help develop skills and strategies for writing academic essays and papers in English at an upper intermediate language level or higher. Support will be provided for grammar and usage, but the emphasis will be on: - clear structuring (planning, good introductions and convincing conclusions, using clear signalling language and paragraphing) - economy of expression and precision (style, syntax and punctuation) - clarity of ideas and concrete language (style; syntax; academic phrases and vocabulary for defining, linking, comparing, cause and result, etc.) - cross-cultural differences in academic language (German vs. English style) Classes will include communication activities as well as writing tasks, because discussing the ideas in English beforehand helps students to write them down more clearly, free from German (or native-language) syntax. Students will be encouraged to provide critical and supportive feedback, and will learn techniques for getting the most from peer support. Writing will be done in class as well as for homework. Students will write an essay for the final evaluation, and this will be developed during the semester, with support from the instructor and fellow students.
