Cultural Studies: Annelie Kebschull - Discover your universe

These are the first sentences of Annelie Kebschull's self-discovery book titled "expedio - discover what is already there". The volume is part of her bachelor's thesis, with which she completed her communication design studies at the University of Europe for Applied Sciences in Hamburg. The work was supervised, among others, by former Leuphana promoter and educational scientist Dr. Valerie Riepe: "She drew my attention to Leuphana and recommended that I study there." Since Annelie Kebschull still lacks credit points in some science theory modules for a master's degree at Leuphana, she is currently studying cultural studies at the college: "Communication design has a lot of practical parts and I wished to dive more into scientific theory." For her, studying is part of her personal development: "It's important to explore your own self. But you also have to know the world around you to decide what is important," says the 23-year-old.

The lecture "Cultural Organization and Society" in particular provided the student with exciting theoretical insights that she can combine with her practical publishing work: "Synergies are important and enriching for me." Last year, Annelie Kebschull presented her volume at the Frankfurt Book Fair: "I was lucky enough to find a publisher there right away." The independent Zurich-based Kommode-Verlag will publish the book this September.

In the self-discovery volume, readers are guided through an illustrated personality test, among other things. As astronauts, they discover their own galaxy and solar system, which represent their environment, and subsequently their planet, which symbolizes their self. The book is based in part on Myers-Briggs' type indicator. "In communication design classes, we did a lot of work on identity. You learn how to advise companies on branding. That can also be applied to finding personality," explains Annelie Kebschull.

In addition to psychology, the student is interested in educational science. She is taking a minor in the subject at Leuphana College and attending other lectures in sociology and philosophy. In the fall, she hopes to begin a master's degree in "Contemporary Criticism" at the Graduate School. "Through my studies at Leuphana, I'm just developing a critical perspective that is very good for me. With the master's degree, I would like to expand this thinking," says Annelie Kebschull.

It is possible that the student will work on her second book at the same time. In the sequel, readers will experience what moves them by exploring what their planet is made of and how it functions.
