Reformed complementary studies: ‘A real place for exchange’

2025-09-09 Leuphana's complementary studies programme stands for interdisciplinary, reflective and dialogue-oriented study – complementing the subject-specific studies with major and minor. The programme has now been further developed into the ‘Forum of Sciences’.

The newly established complementary programme sees itself as a “Forum of Sciences”.

The major challenges of our time cannot be solved by a single field of research: digitalisation, the climate crisis, artificial intelligence, diversity, democracy and sustainable innovation require interdisciplinary exchange. ‘The newly established complementary programme sees itself as a “Forum of Sciences” – a real place of exchange where students and teachers discuss social issues together,’ explains Dr Felix Lösing from the College.

The new programme is divided into six subject areas: from digitality & technology, economics & innovation, individual & society, values & identity, art & communication to nature & environment. Each of these fields combines perspectives from different disciplines. In the complementary programme, students at Leuphana College can choose between 100 and 120 courses.

Students take one module per semester, allowing them to gain insights into all six subject areas by the time they complete their bachelor's degree. The subject areas are covered in around 20 seminars and lectures from all schools. ‘We see the programme as part of a modern liberal education,’ explains Felix Lösing.
