JuPaCo

Long-term psychosocial consequences of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic for young people

The JuPaCo project investigates the long-term effects of the pandemic on young people aged 15 to 30 concerning their psychosocial well-being and their perception of their health overall. By evaluating existing quantitative and qualitative data, the project focuses on the importance of coping strategies and social support relationships and resources for young people. The JuPaCo project has a special focus on young people with depleted (Lutz 2002) or precarious parental support, such as young people growing up in residential group care or foster families.

In the project, existing data from the nationwide quantitative studies JuCo I-IV on the burdens and concerns of young people during the COVID-19 pandemic (including the University of Hildesheim) and from the qualitative project JuPa-Quali Enabling Social Participation of Young People in Alternative Care in Times of Pandemics (Leuphana University of Lüneburg) will be analyzed in depth. Further surveys based on the aforementioned studies will be conducted during the JuPaCo project using guided interviews with affected young people (Leuphana University of Lüneburg).

Two central research gaps will be closed: Firstly, psychosocial consequences of the pandemic for older adolescents and young adults will be analyzed in an interdisciplinary manner from the perspective of social pedagogy and psychiatry, about which there are insufficient research findings to date. Secondly, qualitative data will be used to compare support structures and coping strategies over time based on a longitudinal section.

The project is being carried out in cooperation with the Institute for Social Work and Social Pedagogy at Leuphana University. It is funded by the MWK Lower Saxony and is part of the Covid-19 Research Network Lower Saxony (COFONI).
