Online talk: Lívia Nolasco-Rózsás (UCL) on ‘Beyond Matter’ and the virtual reconstruction of exhibitions
24. Jan
The ephemeral nature of temporary (art) exhibitions is a characteristic of the uniqueness of this format. However, this poses a challenge for research: despite documentation, archive materials and exhibition catalogues, the spatial-aesthetic formations of past exhibitions are difficult to research and evaluate. This also applies to the two landmark exhibitions ‘Les Immatériaux’ (Centre Pompidou, Paris, 1985) and ‘Iconoclash’ (ZKM Karlsruhe, 2002), which play a major role in our seminar on ‘Thought Exhibitions’. However, the research and virtual reconstruction project ‘Beyond Matter: Cultural Heritage on the Verge of Virtual Reality’ can at least give us an idea of these formations and make them accessible via the two-dimensionality of our screens. The EU-funded project was carried out between 2019 and 2023 by the ZKM in cooperation with the Centre Pompidou and reconstructed ‘Les Immateriaux’ and ‘Iconoclash’ as case studies. The project, the results of which include reconstructions, numerous events and a comprehensive publication, was coordinated by Lívia Nolasco-Rózsás as its acting head, who also explored the Thought Exhibition concept as part of this research. We are very fortunate to be able to welcome Lívia, who is currently a researcher at University College London, for a guest lecture on ‘Beyond Matter’ in our seminar. The lecture is open to the faculty.
