Dramatize This! Writing and Performing for the Stage and Screen. Englisch C1 (Seminar)

Dozent/in: Maryann Henck

Termin:
wöchentlich | Montag | 10:15 - 13:45 | 01.04.2024 - 05.07.2024 | C 5.111 Seminarraum

Inhalt: This seminar is not only for drama queens and ings, but also for anyone interested in the link between written and spoken words in general as well as composing and performing dialogues in specific. By examining excerpts from plays, sitcoms, and dramadies, we will explore possibilities for transforming stories into dramatic scenarios. In the following sessions, we will experiment with creative writing techniques that will help you craft dialogues for your own dramatic scenario. The seminar will consist of group peer-editing sessions as well as individual appointments to support you during the creative process. Of course, drama is meant to be performed. Therefore, at the end of the semester, you will be expected to translate your dramatic scenarios into a final mini-performance, e.g. on stage, as street theater, or in sitcom/dramedy format.

Where No Man Has Gone Before: Women and Science Fiction (FSL) (Seminar)

Inhalt: What can social science fiction tell us about society? How can this genre - whose roots lie in pulp fiction - shed light on a variety of social issues? How can you create a collaborative novella? These and other questions will be examined in this seminar. Students will read excerpts of social science fiction and investigate how this genre presents a critique of social conditions. In order to do this, students will acquire a knowledge of and apply various theories to analyze social aspects of select short stories and/or excerpts. In addition to the theoretical introduction, students will create a collaborative science fiction novella applying all the principles discussed in class. A collaborative novella is a group effort so students who take this class must be there on specific days. Please check the syllabus in myStudy to make sure you can be there.

Inhalt: With Grammarly, DeepL, and artificial intelligence, is taking an academic writing class still useful? Will you write your bachelor thesis in English and are not quite sure if you're ready? Will you need to write an assignment or essay in English for one of your classes this semester? If you answered yes to any of those questions, then you may want to take this class. Just as students need to know the fundamentals of math to use the calculator properly, academics need certain skills to make the most out of a seemingly unending amount of AI-driven writing tools. In this class, we'll explore the fundamentals of academic writing and the possibilities of digital and/or AI-driven tools. Further topics include recognizing quality writing, including producing knock-out introductions and conclusions, making the most of citations, examining personal bias and positionality (how one's identity affects their writing and research), and critically revising one's own work. Finally, we'll also take a closer look at matters of style and creative language use. Participants will work on and discuss many writing activities in class. At the same time, due to the heterogeneity of seminar participants, the instructor will assist students in developing their own writing styles and mentor them individually. Those who are willing to put the time and effort into the class should notice a great improvement in their confidence and writing skills. The first hour of the seminar is devoted to writing practice and the themes mentioned in the content section. During the second hour of the seminar, students have the opportunity to set their individual writing goal(s) and take advantage of language coaching.
