"Happiness Research": An empirical approach towards the understanding of satisfaction and well-being of individuals and regions (Seminar)

Inhalt: Course description: This course is part of the complementary studies (Komplementärstudium “Medialitätsorientierte Zugänge zu den Sozialwissenschaften”). The teaching and examination language is German. But all materials (including slides, literature, online sources) are in English so that English speaking students will be able to follow the course (you can also answer the test and give the presentation in English). German speaking students must be able to deal with this English material and the German teaching language will help you with that. Although “Happiness research” is interdisciplinary and empirically driven, the course has a focus on the literature from economics. But no specific knowledge from economics or econometrics is necessary for the course. The first part of the course is lecture-based and gives an introduction to happiness research, its use for science and policy as well as some conceptional issues. Moreover, students are shown with real world data for Germany how aggregated happiness statistics are generated and how regression analyses are conducted in a statistical software package. The first part concludes with some examples from the economics literature about the impact of income, inflation, unemployment, conspicuous consumption, floods and droughts, air pollution, and terrorism on individual satisfaction and well-being. As part of the combined examination (KWA), students have to write a short test (30 minutes) about the first part, which accounts for 50% of the total grade. In the second part of the course, students have to present “Happiness Reports” in groups, which also compare nations and regions. Whereas the “World Happiness Reports” are more explicitly related to happiness and satisfaction, the OECD reports “How’s life? Measuring well-being” take a broader perspective on well-being, of which satisfaction is only one measure. Each group (4-6 students) has to present one report in one session (approx. 60-70 minutes + discussion in class) with a short introduction and conclusion; but the main focus should be on the presentation of the chapters about specific topics. The jointly graded group presentations account for 50% of the total individual grade. Please see the course outline and material for more information.

Business model design and innovation (FSL) (Seminar)

Inhalt: Starting from the mid 1990s, the concept of business models has attracted the attention of scholars and practitioners alike. Today, business models have become an integrated management concept. This course will provide students with insights into the nature of business models and their role as a source of innovation. Dealing with academic literature and real-life cases, students will get an understanding of the designs, processes and instruments of business models and business model innovation. The course employs a combination of lectures and in-class discussions. As part of the examination, students will have to apply their theoretical knowledge to real-life cases. The results of the group work will be presented and discussed in class. Following that, students will be asked to write individual reports reflecting the case.

Inhalt: Ausgehend von Grundüberlegungen zum Wesen von Risiken werden insbes. finanzwirtschaftliche Risiken näher charakterisiert, gefolgt von einer ebenso grundsätzlichen Betrachtung des Risikomanagementprozesses mit seinen einzelnen Phasen und Problemfeldern. Zudem werden Finanzderivate als (innovative) Instrumente des Finanz- und Risikomanagements vorgestellt und schließlich für ausgewählte finanzwirtschaftliche Risiken Ansätze zu deren Analyse und Steuerung aufgezeigt sowie kritisch gewürdigt.

Handling ethical dilemmas in corporate decision-making (FSL) (Seminar)

Inhalt: The course explores how to navigate ethical decision-making in the workplace. Professionals frequently encounter complex decision contexts in which they are confronted with ethical dilemmas. This course introduces philosophical theories that help guide ethical decision-making and develops concepts to deal with these complex situations in practice. The course employs a combination of lectures and in-class discussions. For the examination, the students will have to apply their theoretical knowledge from the lectures to contemporary real-life cases in the business context (group work). On the one hand, the results will be presented and discussed in class. On the other hand, the groups will have to write an academic essay based on the discussion of their selected cases using a moral theory.

Kehrt der Faschismus zurück? Globale Debatten und lokale Kontroversen (Seminar)

Inhalt: Lange galt Faschismus als historischer Gegenstand. Doch als im Oktober 2022, hundert Jahre nach dem "Marsch auf Rom" und der Machtübernahme Mussolinis, auf "einhundert Jahre Faschismus" zurückgeblickt wurde, kam kaum ein Beitrag dazu ohne Blick auf die Gegenwart und Zukunft aus. Von den "Fratelli d'Italia" bis Donald Trump, von Jair Bolsonaro in Brasilien bis Narendra Modi in Indien, vom Mullah-Regime in Iran über jenes der AKP in der Türkei bis zu Putins Russland, und nicht zuletzt die Wahlerfolge der AfD: politische Parteien, Bewegungen, Politiker*innen und Regime in aller Welt gaben zuletzt Anlass zur besorgten Fragen: Kehrt der Faschismus zurück? Was würde das bedeuten? Kann ein politisches Projekt, das unter den spezifischen Bedingungen der 1920er und -30er Jahre in Europa entstanden ist, überhaupt "wiederkehren"? Wie hilfreich sind Komposita und Bindestrich-Konzepte wie Neo-, Post-, oder Semi-Faschismus, Alltagsfaschismus, Mikrofaschismus, Ökofaschismus, Islamfaschismus? Kann ein Verständnis historischer faschistischer Bewegungen dabei helfen, aktuelle Dynamiken zu verstehen - oder führen historische Analogien eher in die Irre und verstellen den Blick auf das Neue?

Medienpädagogik und (Medien-)Sozialisation im Spiegel zentraler gesellschaftlicher Herausforderungen des 21. Jahrhunderts (Seminar)

Inhalt: Im Seminar setzen sich die Studierenden mit zentralen gesellschaftlichen Herausforderungen des 21. Jahrhunderts wie beispielsweise Flucht/ Migration, Klimawandel und Fragen um Nachhaltigkeit oder Desinformation in digitalen Medien auseinander. Diese Herausforderungen können direkt oder indirekt auf das Leben und Aufwachsen Heranwachsender Einfluss nehmen. Sie finden in einer Gesellschaft statt, die als (tiefgreifend) mediatisiert (Krotz 2021) zu bezeichnen ist. Gesellschaftliche Herausforderungen begegnen Menschen medial vermittelt über unterschiedliche Zugangswege und werden von ihnen ebenso aufgegriffen und weiterverarbeitet. Dabei agieren sie im Rahmen der Möglichkeiten, die Plattformbetreibende, Gesetzgebende oder – im Fall Heranwachsender – Erziehungsberechtigte für sie vorgeben und gestalten. Dies bedeutet für einige Gruppen auch, dass sie durch die vorfindlichen Gesellschaftsstrukturen von entsprechenden Prozessen ausgeschlossen und sich Ungleichheiten im digitalen Raum fortsetzen. Studierende können sich beispielsweise mit folgenden Fragestellungen auseinandersetzen: Welche Bedeutung haben die (beschriebenen oder weitere) Herausforderungen im Zuge der (Medien-)Sozialisation von Kindern und Jugendlichen und auch über die gesamte Lebensspanne hinweg? Wie werden spezifische (ggf. benachteiligte) Personengruppen durch die Medienpädagogik in Schule und außerschulischen Kontexten adressiert? Welche Zielstellungen ergeben sich aus den beschriebenen oder weiteren globalen Entwicklungen für die Rolle der Medienpädagogik? Wie können die Themen in der medienpädagogischen Praxis aufgegriffen werden? Wie greifen verschiedene Akteur:innengruppen aktuelle gesellschaftliche Herausforderungen in ihrem Alltag auf (bspw. Protestbewegungen von Jugendlichen)? Welche Rolle kommt digitalen Medien dabei zu, die beschriebenen oder weitere globale Herausforderungen des 21. Jahrhunderts zu bearbeiten? Welche Unterstützung im Hinblick auf diese spezifischen Herausforderungen brauchen die Heranwachsenden sowie die pädagogischen Fachkräfte? Das Seminar knüpft inhaltlich an die diesjährige Frühjahrstagung der Sektion Medienpädagogik der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Erziehungswissenschaft an, die an der Leuphana am 30./31. März 2023 stattfinden wird.

Migration and Asylum Policy in the European Union (FSL) (Seminar)

Inhalt: International migration is often considered one of the major global challenges of our time. In the European Union (EU), asylum and migration policy is today not only a competence of the individual EU member states but also a task of the EU and its institutions. Over the past 20 years or so, the EU has built a legal and political framework for the management of international migration including refugee flows, a framework which is gradually moving from setting minimum norms towards more directly applicable and binding rules and systems. This seminar aims to review, analyse and critically reflect this development. The scope of the seminar comprises both migration for protection and humanitarian purposes, irregular or 'mixed' migration flows and 'legal' migration for purposes such as work, studies or family reunification, and how these migration flows are regulated. Both domestic (national) dimensions of migration and asylum policy, EU dimensions and external dimensions can be covered. While focusing on policies and legal frameworks to regulate international migration and on the behaviour and interests of political actors in the EU, activities of non-governmental actors and civil society can also be studied and discussed. Overall, the seminar aims at examining and identifying the objectives and the potential added value of the Europeanisation of asylum and migration policy as well as the shortcomings and inconsistencies of this process.

Nachhaltige Wasser-Governance (Seminar)

Inhalt: Die nachhaltige Nutzung von Wasser, der Schutz von Gewässer-Ökosystemen sowie der Umgang mit wasserbezogenen Risiken (Dürren, Hochwasser, Starkregen) sind zentrale Aufgaben moderner Staaten, nicht erst seit Verabschiedung der Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Wasser ist ein äußerst dynamisches Politikfeld und steht im Zeichen - von Ökonomisierung und Privatisierung; - von Europäisierung und Globalisierung; - zunehmender Risiken als Folge des Klimawandels sowie entsprechender Maßnahmen der Klimawandel-Anpassung - neuer Governance-Formen (Stakeholder- und Öffentlichkeitsbeteiligung); und - einer Verschiebung von Governance-Ebenen hin zu naturräumlichen Skalen (River Basin Management). Diese Themenfelder betreffen essentielle Fragen zu potentiellen Interessenskonflikten, effektiver Umsetzung internationaler und nationaler Regulierungen für den Zugang zu qualitativ hochwertigem Trinkwasser und dementsprechende Politikansätze in verschiedenen Ländern auf europäischer und globaler Ebene. Im Seminar werden die wichtigsten Grundlagen von Wasserpolitik und -Governance erarbeitet, das Politikfeld, seine Akteure und Policies sowie aktuelle Herausforderungen untersucht. Insbesondere geht es um die Frage, welche Governance-Ansätze geeignet sind, um nachhaltige Wasserpolitik und einen resilienten Umgang mit Wasser-Risiken zu ermöglichen.

North American Studies Meets the Social Sciences (FSL) (Modul 2, Profil NAS) (Seminar)

Inhalt: In this seminar we will study different societies in North America and the relationship between individuals within these societies. We will focus on diverse issues while employing different theories. The question of identity has always been part of North America. The confrontation between native peoples, waves of immigrants, and enslaved people have created a kaleidoscope of identities and relationships. This course uses sociological theories in combination with literature to describe these identities. What happens in an American ‘melting pot’ ? What does this tell us about North America? Students will read excerpts, short stories, blog posts from sociology and literature to discover identity in multicultural societies.

Pierre Bourdieu: Einführung in sein Denken (Lektüreseminar) (Seminar)

Inhalt: Pierre Bourdieu gilt als einer der bedeutendsten und einflussreichsten Soziologen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Er war schon zu Lebzeiten ein Klassiker der Soziologie und wurde weit über die fachdisziplinären Grenzen der Soziologie hinaus rezipiert. Aus kulturwissenschaftlicher Perspektive ist er besonders interessant, weil er sozialstrukturelle Fragen und kultursoziologische Analysen begrifflich-konzeptionell zusammenzubinden vermochte. So ist er z.B. dafür bekannt geworden, die kulturellen Präferenzen unterschiedlicher Klassenfraktionen aufgezeigt zu haben. Das Seminar führt in Pierre Bourdieus Werk ein. Im ersten Teil stehen unterschiedliche analytische Begrifflichkeiten aus diesem im Zentrum. Hier werden Bourdieus verschiedene Kapitalarten, sein Konzept der Praxis und seine Dialektik von Habitus und Feld thematisch. Immer wieder werden Rückbezüge zu Bourdieus Referenzautor:innen (z.B. Durkheim und die Differenzierungstheorie, Marx und die soziale Ungleichheitsforschung) vorgenommen. Über diesen Zugang soll ein Blick für die umfassendere Konzeption seiner Praxistheorie als Gesellschaftstheorie eröffnet werden. Der zweite Teil des Seminars gibt einen Einblick in einige der empirischen Studien Bourdieus, anhand derer er seine Gesellschaftstheorie entwickelt. Diese sind den Bereichen „Soziale Klassen und Lebensstile“, „Kultur und kulturelle Feldanalysen“ und „Politisches Feld und Feld der Macht“ entnommen. In einem letzten Seminarabschnitt werden aktuelle Weiterführungen Bourdieus diskutiert, so etwa Illouz Soziologie der Liebe oder Loïc Wacquants Soziologie des Sports.

Politics4Future (FSL) (Seminar)

Inhalt: This course is designed for students who are interested to participate in an intercultural learning on important topics such as Education for Sustainable Development, global citizenship learning and understanding the role of politics and political education in classroom teaching. This course is part of an international collaboration between six universities on building capacities of teachers on sustainable development. Background of the Project: The Institute for Sustainable Development and Learning, a cross faculty institute of Leuphana is leading an international project called Politics4Future and it is aimed at pre-service teachers in five countries Canada, Costa Rica, Germany, Greece and South Africa supported by the partners universities to engage in a hybrid learning curriculum called Politics4Future. The course will be offered in hybrid learning setting meaning online learning sessions (with all the international participants) and face-to-face sessions with Leuphana teachers. The curriculum contemplates interweaving of political education, Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship Education in teacher education and training. This project seeks to support the teacher trainees to be agents of this transformative change through knowledge gained via participation in the course. Religion as a Source of Law (FSL) (Seminar)

Inhalt: The source of laws today originated with religious beliefs, beliefs that guided and ruled human behaviour before there were parliaments. Those beliefs, along with their customs and practices, evolved into the laws we have today. This can be one source of explanation and understanding of the laws today and the theories and public policies underlying them. The focus is its role in the developement of general civil and criminal (non-religious) law. Approximately the first half covers psychological and sociological explanations of religion. The second discusses religiously embedded ideas that lead to the later developpment of legal systems. This course takes a socio-psychological approach to the question of the source of our laws, focusing on both civil and common law, but covering also other families of laws, such as religious and tribunal law.

The transformative role of International Law: tackling global environmental challenges (FSL) (Seminar)

Inhalt: From the early stages of the development of international environmental law in the 20th century until today, we have witnessed a proliferation of environmental legislation. While many legal tools and instruments are available, science calls for a catalytic impetus in the fight against the triple planetary crisis: climate, biodiversity, and pollution. This planetary crisis - highlighted in the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services reports, among others - requires a legal and governance architecture for the protection of people, their rights, and the environment. How can international law address the different environmental challenges that we are facing globally? The aim of the course is to examine the regulation under international law of various environmental sectors and the relationship between international environmental law and other aspects of international law and policy. This seminar will also explore the power of international law to facilitate the necessary systemic changes to address the current triple planetary crisis. Can global environmental challenges be solved using the available legal tools? The seminar will analyse the potential strengths of existing legal instruments, but also the limits and challenges of legal responses to these challenges. Particular attention will be on the analysis of Multilateral Environmental Agreements on climate change, biodiversity, and pollution.

Theoriegeschichte der Ökonomik (Modul 1, Profil OekonPlus) (Seminar)

Inhalt: Der Kurs soll einen Überblick über die Entstehung und Entwicklung der ökonomischen Theorie geben. Die Darstellung dieses Prozesses erfolgt paradigmenorientiert und soll den Studierenden ein tieferes Verständnis für die Herkunft wirtschaftspolitischer Dogmen aus der Entwicklung der ökonomischen Theorie bereitstellen. Weitergehend soll die Frage diskutiert werden, wie sich eine Wissenschaft, also auch die politische Ökonomie, strukturell weiterentwickeln kann. Nach den ersten einführenden Veranstaltungen sollen sich die Studierenden durch intensives Literaturstudium und anschließender Besprechung im Kurs einen detaillierten Überblick über wichtige ökonomische Lehrmeinungen verschaffen. In der zweiten Kurshälfte sollen dann einzelne ökonomische Ansätze in Form von Gruppenreferaten von den Studierenden bearbeitet und vorgetragen werden. Die Teilnahme am Referat mit abschließender Verschriftlichung stellt dann den Abschluss des Kurses dar.

Zeitdiagnosen (Seminar)

Inhalt: Es gehört zum Kerngeschäft der Soziologie, die Charakteristik ihrer Zeit begrifflich zu fassen und unter dieser Perspektive zu analysieren. Zeitdiagnosen sind ein – besonders streitbares – soziologisches Genre, das die zentrale Entwicklungslinie einer Gegenwartsgesellschaft als Ganzer identifiziert. Oft haben Zeitdiagnosen eine Relevanz über den akademischen Kontext hinaus. Als populär ausgerichtete Wissensform werden sie dann in einer interessierten Öffentlichkeit diskutiert und tragen auf dieser Basis zur gesellschaftlichen Selbstverständigung bei. Zugleich gibt es derzeit gesellschaftlich ein besonders großes Bedürfnis nach Zeitdiagnosen, die immer dichter aufeinander folgenden. Beispiele für Zeitdiagnosen sind die „Risikogesellschaft“, die „Netzwerkgesellschaft“, die „Erlebnisgesellschaft“, oder auch die „Sicherheitsgesellschaft“.
