Whether a piece of music is judged as innovative or complex should not determine its right to exist. We pose the question: should the compositional output of women who were artistically and financially successful during their lifetime not be afforded the same historical documentation as that of their male counterparts? Without publishing and performing such repertoire, an opinion on its artistic merit cannot in fact be formed.
The problem, in its essence, is that women have been systematically excluded from music history. Recent research has demonstrated that the gender gap in the Eurocentric art music canon is not due to a lack of compositions by women, but rather to biases in music historiography, archival practice, and concert programming. The rediscovery of approximately 150 neglected Finnish women composers alone suggests the scale of repertoire that remains hidden or overlooked throughout Europe.
German composer Emilie Mayer (1812–1883) enjoyed considerable artistic and financial success during her lifetime – her oeuvre, however, largely disappeared from public consciousness following her death. Contemporary accounts describe Mayer as a celebrated composer whose works were performed throughout Germany and beyond. Despite this success, much of her music remains unpublished and underrepresented in both scholarship and performance. Drawing upon feminist musicology and the concept of gender mainstreaming, we will conduct research into Eurocentric art music and the restoring of neglected works to both historical scholarship and contemporary performance culture.

Das Leuphana Cantorum sind sechs talentierte Sänger:innen, die seit Oktober 2025 anspruchsvolle und breitgefächerte Vokalmusik von Renaissancestücken bis hin zu Popsongs erarbeiten. Ausgewählt wurden vier- bis sechsstimmige Stücke, die einen besonderen Fokus auf das gemeinsame, kammermusikalische Singen ohne Dirigat und ohne Klavierbegleitung legen. Trotz dieser Herausforderungen für die Balance, die Intonation und die Dynamik überzeugt das kleinste Ensemble des Musikzentrums mit einem frischen und agilen Klang sowie einem humorvollen Miteinander, das in den drei sehr unterschiedlichen Stücken im heutigen Programm bestimmt spürbar wird.

The Leuphana Cantorum consists of six talented singers who, since October 2025, have been working on challenging and wide-ranging vocal music, from Renaissance pieces to pop songs. Four- to six-part pieces were selected, with a special focus on ensemble singing without a conductor or piano accompaniment. Despite these challenges in terms of balance, intonation and dynamics, the music centre's smallest ensemble impresses with its fresh and agile sound and humorous interaction, which is certainly noticeable in the three very different pieces in today's programme.

Das Leuphana Vokalensemble ist ein anspruchsvolles Chorensemble für Studierende mit Chor- oder Gesangserfahrung, das sich der Erarbeitung eines vielseitigen Repertoires widmet. In wöchentlichen Proben arbeitet das Ensemble in einer Besetzung von etwa 40 Sänger*innen an Werken mittleren Schwierigkeitsgrades aus verschiedenen Epochen und Stilrichtungen, von Renaissance und Klassik über Jazz bis hin zu Pop. Der Schwerpunkt liegt überwiegend auf a-cappella-Literatur, mit besonderem Fokus auf Klangbildung, Intonation und dem Entwickeln eines homogenen Ensembleklangs. Das Vokalensemble präsentiert sein Repertoire regelmäßig in Konzerten des Musikzentrums sowie in weiteren musikalischen Projekten. Die Teilnahme setzt ein kurzes Vorsingen zu Semesterbeginn voraus; Notenlesefähigkeit wird empfohlen.

The Leuphana Vocal Ensemble is an exciting ensemble for students with choral or singing experience, dedicated to developing a diverse repertoire. In weekly rehearsals, the ensemble, consisting of around 40 singers, works on pieces of medium difficulty from various eras and styles, ranging from Renaissance and classical to jazz and pop. The emphasis is mainly on a cappella literature, with a special focus on sound production, intonation and the development of a homogeneous ensemble sound. The Vocal Ensemble regularly presents its repertoire in concerts at the Music Centre and in other musical projects. Participation requires a short audition at the beginning of the semester; the ability to read music is recommended.
