From Bachelor to Master

Studying art education at Leuphana University prepares you to work in a wide range of contexts where art is practiced and discussed with a diverse audience. Art holds enormous potential to change today's society, a potential that is often controlled by the powerful, the wealthy, and the educated. We practice art as a strategy of resistance to these structures - as an openness to the unfamiliar and unknown, to experimentation and learning-by-doing, to deep empathy, tolerance, and respect for other cultures.

Many of our students go on to work in non-profit art organizations, shape policy for public offices responsible for culture and the arts, and teach art within elementary and secondary schools, as well as art education in sites outside of the public school system.

Master of Education (with Subject Area of Art)

In order to teach art in the public school system in Germany, you need to acquire a Master of Education (MEd). Our master program builds upon our bachelor program in that the three core areas – studio practice, art education, und art history / visual studies – are expanded and deepened. Additionally, students engage in sustained artistic research project culminating in a project that ideally combines all three of these areas (“Projektband”).
