Sports not only have a positive impact on our health and well-being, but also create spaces for interaction and instill values such as fairness, respect, and team spirit. To ensure that everyone can experience these positive benefits, we must recognize diversity, treat one another with care and consideration, and break down barriers that stand in the way of equal participation in college sports.
We are actively committed to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and non-discriminatory sports culture in which everyone feels welcome—regardless of gender, background, intellectual and physical abilities, sexual orientation, age, religion, or worldview.
As a university institution, the University Sports Center is thus aligned with Leuphana’s mission statement, which enshrines diversity, equal opportunity, and gender equality as core values and pursues the goal of “creating suitable conditions for reflection and university development that are oriented toward gender, diversity, and inclusion and critical of discrimination.” (Read more here: Leuphana).
Why do we need to talk about these issues in the context of sports?
Despite its many benefits, sports—like other areas of society—carries the risk of exclusion and discrimination: people with varying levels of ability, expectations, and physical capabilities come together. This creates situations where people compare themselves to others and may be confronted with physical ideals. Furthermore, subjective perceptions and boundaries of well-being vary greatly. All of this makes it clear why these issues must be consciously addressed in a sports context.
We continuously strive to promote diversity and inclusion in our programs and structures.
We view this as an ongoing learning process and are therefore very grateful for your feedback! At the same time, we sometimes encounter limitations in implementation, such as limited space or a lack of influence over the use of external sports facilities.
Measures
What specific steps are we taking to ensure a safe and respectful sports experience for everyone involved?
- A Code of Conduct for our instructors, which is an integral part of their contracts
- Training for University Sports Center staff on the prevention of sexual violence in sports
- Free menstrual products available in the locker rooms
- Development of awareness programs and guidelines for events and trips, as well as the deployment of awareness officers at university sports events
- Low-threshold ways to report incidents
- Adjusted Sauna Hours – FINTA and Malesauna
- Offers for FINTA: FINTA* workout times and courses, Special offers during promotional weeks, such as cycle-based training

Incident Reporting
Have you experienced or witnessed boundary-violating behavior, discrimination, sexual violence, or harassment in the context of university sports?
We know that it’s often difficult to talk about such incidents, so we’ve set up a form that allows you to report misconduct easily and securely.
Please note that we have deliberately chosen not to allow completely anonymous reporting. The reason for this is that without your contact information, we have no way to communicate with you or, if necessary, ask follow-up questions or seek clarification about the situation—which is often essential to providing you with targeted assistance. This is also the only way we can take action against boundary violations. You can rest assured that every reported case will be taken seriously and handled confidentially by our trained team. We are bound by confidentiality toward third parties—unless you request otherwise. You decide whether and what further steps we take.
