Werdegang
Lea Boecker ist Juniorprofessorin für Psychologie mit dem Schwerpunkt gesellschaftliche Transformation am Institut für Management und Organisation. Sie hat Psychologie an der Universität Würzburg studiert und am Social Cognition Center Köln promoviert. Ihre Forschung untersucht, wie soziale Vergleiche, soziale Emotionen wie Neid und Schadenfreude sowie Gruppenzugehörigkeit Motivation, Verhalten und soziale Interaktionen beeinflussen. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt liegt auf diesen Prozessen in Sport- und Gesundheitskontexten – etwa auf emotionalen Reaktionen auf Erfolge und Misserfolge, Motivation und Zielverfolgung, Gruppenprozessen im Sport sowie psychischer Gesundheit und Resilienz.
Weitere Forschungsfelder umfassen Status und soziale Hierarchien (Dominanz und Prestige), soziale Normen, prosoziales Verhalten und emotionale Gesichtsausdrücke. Methodisch verbindet sie Selbstberichte und experimentelle Ansätze mit psychophysiologischen Messungen wie Elektromyographie (EMG), Experience Sampling und automatisierter Gesichtsausdrucksanalyse.

Emotion and Motivation: From Feelings to Action
What are emotions, how do they arise, and which functions do they serve? What motivates people to pursue certain goals, invest effort, or disengage—and how do emotions shape these processes?
Throughout the seminar, we will connect fundamental theories and models of emotion and motivation with recent empirical research from general psychology and social cognition. We will examine how emotions guide attention, goal pursuit, and behavior, and how goals, feedback, and self-regulatory processes, in turn, shape emotional experiences. Social comparison will serve as one central example of this interplay: How do comparisons with others provide information about goal progress, and when do they motivate people to increase effort, reduce effort, or disengage?
In a practical session, students will also learn about different methods of measuring emotions and explore the possibilities and limitations of automated facial-expression analysis.
The seminar combines theoretical input with student presentations of selected research articles, discussions, and applied exercises.

In small groups, students will dive into different areas of social cognition & emotion by running their own experiments. Our goal is to investigate processes underlying different societal-relevant phenomena and constructs, such as social cognition & emotion, human imitation, belief in free will or trust in science — to name just a few examples.
This course consists of the following 10 parts: (1) discussing relevant empirical literature of social and cognitive psychology, (2) identifying a research question, (3) deriving hypotheses, (4) getting to know research designs in applied psychology, (5) applying an empirical research design, (6) implementing and conducting an empirical research project, (7) collecting data, (8) analyzing the data, (9) evaluating the results, and (10) presenting the findings.
