Challenges and Opportunities of Datafication: Interdisciplinary Perspectives (Seminar)
Dozent/in: Georg Reischauer
Termin:
14-täglich | Mittwoch | 08:15 - 11:45 | 16.10.2024 - 31.01.2025 | C 4.111 Seminarraum
Inhalt: Information communication technologies (ICTs) and big data have given rise to a fundamental digital transformation across public and private sectors, a process referred to as datafication This course offers students the advanced theoretical and analytical skills needed to articulate, develop and understand the social implications of these digital transformations, their challenges and opportunities. To provide conceptual and analytical frameworks that can help students develop, manage and reflect on data-driven strategies in organizations, this course will identify key economic, social, legal and ethical issues at the intersection of technology, business and society. Because of the organizational complexity of ICTs and big data, the course mobilizes cross-disciplinary insights to facilitate a range of analyses and management positions across private, public and non-profit organizations. Hence, the course brings together different perspectives, research methods, and practices from business studies, organization studies, sociology, law, communication, or data science. The course will cover several topics, including an introduction to datafication; governance of/ datafication, transparency in a datafied world, platform economy, algorithmic management and control, sustainability, or ethics. Students will be taught these key focus areas and understand the challenges and opportunities of datafication in public and private organizations. The course will include real-world cases, which will enable the students to contextualize and situate relevant case-based examples within existing scientific debates concerning big data, economy and society.

Inhalt: Have you ever wondered how you could turn your idea for alleviating a sustainability challenge into a fleshed-out solution desired by stakeholders? This seminar will teach the concept of sustainable business models (SBMs) and value propositions, and their role for sustainable entrepreneurship through an action-oriented approach. You will learn how to experiment with value propositions to avoid the caveats of rigid business planning and incorrect assumptions. The interdisciplinary student groups will develop their own ideas for addressing sustainability challenges into value propositions, test these in the field and reflect on their learning over the course of the seminar. You will present and discuss your projects in class frequently. Additionally, you will need to reflect on your individual progress as well as the social, ecological, economic, and ethical implications of your work. You will apply scientific knowledge on sustainable entrepreneurship, business experimentation and sustainable value propositions to respond to societal challenges. As business experimentation benefits greatly from diverse skillsets and perspectives, the teams will be able to complement and enrich each other. For more information, you can check out the course evaluation of past iterations. This course may be optionally completed as part of the Leuphana Sustainable Entrepreneurship Certificate (LSEC). Check the section "Other Information" for more information.

Navigating The Future: Building Critical Skills For Tomorrow (Seminar)
Dozent/in: Michael Gielnik, Janina Peschmann
Termin:
wöchentlich | Mittwoch | 12:15 - 13:45 | 14.10.2024 - 31.01.2025 | C 16.223 Seminarraum
Inhalt: This seminar focuses on inter- and transdisciplinary competencies for the future of work - Future Skills. Beyond the boundaries of one's discipline, changes, requirements, and consequences of constant change are critically discussed from a psychological perspective. Students will contribute their individual and disciplinary viewpoints to jointly build an understanding of what the future holds. Overall, this seminar engages students to actively reflect on and apply future skills within their specific fields and engage in interdisciplinary perspectives. Future skills encompass the essential competencies required to thrive in dynamic work environments. By considering their future work domains, students will engage in various reflections to understand the relevance of future skills, how they can be applied to their personal learning and development processes, to discuss the chances and limits of artificial intelligence (AI) and its ethical aspects. Students will explore how these skills intersect with emerging trends, technological advancements, and societal changes, enabling them to navigate and contribute meaningfully to their respective fields. The accompanying reflective format will provide students with opportunities to assess their skill sets, strengths, and areas for improvement. They will also be encouraged to consider their future professional aspirations and how future skills can be transferred and integrated into their learning and development processes.

Postcolonial Studies (Seminar)
Dozent/in: Anthony Waters
Termin:
wöchentlich | Mittwoch | 08:15 - 09:45 | 14.10.2024 - 31.01.2025 | C 5.325 Seminarraum
Inhalt: Post-colonial theory is about the consequences of Europe’s encounter with the rest of the world since the sixteenth century, as seen from the perspective of the “post-colonial” countries. Readings and activities are focused on how economics, politics, sociology, and ecology of the world changed as a consequence of the cultures that spread around the world since the seventeenth century. Classics of Post-colonial Theory start with authors such as Edward Said, Frantz Fanon, and Benedict Anderson. I will bring my interests in Southeast Asia and East Africa, and ask students to discuss other areas and interests based on their interests. Particularly relevant will be the ethical underpinnings of governance, politics, and trade in the establishment and maintenance of colonialism.

Regionalentwicklung durch Förderung von Cradle to Cradle-Innovationen – die C2C-Modellregion Nordostniedersachsen (Seminar)
Dozent/in: Michael Braungart, Paul Musenbrock
Termin:
wöchentlich | Mittwoch | 14:15 - 15:45 | 14.10.2024 - 31.01.2025 | C 12.001 Seminarraum | Dieses Seminar muss leider kurzfristig abgesagt werden!
Inhalt: DIESES SEMINAR MUSS LEIDER KURZFRISTIG ABGESAGT WERDEN!

Reporting on Gender Diversity - Walk or just Pinkwashing? (Seminar)
Dozent/in: Patrick Velte
Termin:
wöchentlich | Mittwoch | 10:15 - 13:45 | 23.10.2024 - 04.12.2024 | C 12.108 Seminarraum
Inhalt: Introduction to the topic: Women are (still) underrepresented on the boards of German listed companies. In addition, women in management positions earn less on average than their male colleagues (gender pay gap). It is undisputed that this is an untenable state of affairs that contradicts the current understanding of sustainability of the company's divergent stakeholder groups. Despite recent regulatory interventions by national legislators (e.g. introduction of women's quota in the supervisory board and managementboard), regular reporting on gender diversity aspects at management level in current corporate practice is sluggish and in need of optimisation, despite theoretical evidence. It is becoming increasingly important to present concrete strategies for achieving gender equality in management in corporate governance and sustainability reporting. Companies that are either listed or co-determined have had to set targets for increasing the proportion of women on supervisory boards, executive boards and at the highest management level. They must report publicly on these targets and their achievement in the corporate governance statement pursuant to section 289a (2) no. 4 HGB, either in the (group) management report or on the website. This affects approximately 3,500 companies in Germany. Large public interest entities with more than 500 employees have to publish a non-financial statement. This statement must address, among other things, employee and social concerns and the concepts pursued in connection with them. Listed firms and firms with full co-determination must appoint least one woman to the management board if more than three persons belong to it. According to the new Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), an increased amount of firms have to publish full sustainability reports, whereas diversity in the boardroom is also focused. Within the framework of gender diversity reporting, companies can present both general concepts and concrete indicators, such as on gender-specific salary distribution, cases of harassment (and countermeasures taken) or the composition and interaction of governing bodies. Since the under-representation of women in management positions and the gender pay gap in large companies are a fact, it can be assumed that the concrete figures are also likely to be expandable in the sustainability reports of the individual companies. In this case, there is a risk of positive self-promotion from a marketing point of view that is not accepted by stakeholders. This can lead to a situation where, in addition to concrete reporting gaps due to competitive aspects (topic: protection of competition), attention is paid above all to superficially formulated statements of intent in the sense of a generally equality-oriented attitude of the management. From the point of view of the readers of the report, there is a danger that the contents of gender diversity reporting are formulated so vaguely that they could be used in other contexts and in later years without major changes (so-called boilerplates) and that companies present themselves as better than they are in terms of equality and the advancement of women. In reference to the well-known counterpart of greenwashing from environmental sustainability, we speak here of targeted pinkwashing behaviour on the part of management.

Inhalt: The seminar is a global classroom between Leuphana University Lüneburg (GER) and University of Jyväskylä (FI). The seminar comprises lectures and a research garage. The lectures invite students to read, discuss, and learn about various research perspectives on Responsible Digital Transformation and Technology (R2DT). These perspectives involve topics such as responsibility in/of digital transformation, responsibility of digital technologies (e.g. AI, IoT, social media, etc.), the social construction of data, ethics of digital technologies, and governance of AI. The research garage provides guided learning on conducting a small-scale research study on R2DT (e.g., Digital–sustainable co-transformation, responsible AI, corporate digital responsibility, etc.). In groups (2-4 students), students will collect and analyze data as well as present their findings during a presentation and in a written report. The presentation takes place during the last seminar sessions. The written report shall follow the structure of published articles.

Inhalt: The Venice Art Biennale 2024 is centred on the theme of foreignness. "Foreigners Everywhere" is also the title of a group of sculptures by the Italian collective Claire Fontaine, which in turn borrowed the name from a Turin-based group that rebelled against racism and xenophobia in Italy in the early 2000s. Curator Adriano Pedrosa describes foreignness as an omnipresent experience that is based on inequalities and simultaneously produces them, whether in terms of nationality, ethnicity or gender, or in terms of wealth and freedom. In the main exhibition, the Biennale will bring together works that give expression to these experiences. A particular focus will be on migrant movements, especially between the Global North and South, and on outsiders in the artistic field, self-taught artists, "folk art" and indigenous works. A historical section will be dedicated to the different concepts and practices of modernity, while another section will be devoted to Italian art in the diaspora. How the national pavilions interact with the theme of the main exhibition will be one of the guiding questions of the excursion.

Inhalt: Business has a critical part to play in transforming the global economy and society to achieve sustainable development. A range of sustainability accounting and management tools have been developed by academics, policymakers, and practitioners. This course addresses a range of these developments to understand the potential of sustainability management accounting (SMA) to enable sustainability transformations beyond organisational boundaries. A key question to consider is how SMA can support future-oriented, long-term, pro-active management of multiple issues to contribute towards strong sustainable development at the macro-economy level. Aside from understanding sustainability reporting regulation, this requires a focus on measuring and assessing positive impacts and forward-looking, long-term and proactive management of multiple sustainability issues as typified by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and planetary boundaries. The course is structured into two units. The first unit addressed sustainability reporting regulations within the EU-context. The second unit addresses social and environmental impact measurement along the value chain and in the context of the regulatory frameworks of the EU. Through interactive learning activities and relevant case studies, students will have the opportunity to engage deeply with the content and consider the roles that managers and accountants can play as change agents for sustainability within an organisation. As the course addresses the link between sustainability management accounting and sustainability development at the societal level, participation is not restricted to students from accounting programmes. Rather, interdisciplinary perspectives are encouraged and needed in discussing the role that sustainability accounting has to play in advancing sustainability transformations beyond organisational boundaries.

Sustainable Ocean Law and Governance (Seminar)
Dozent/in: Valentin Schatz
Termin:
wöchentlich | Mittwoch | 10:15 - 11:45 | 14.10.2024 - 31.01.2025 | C 12.107 Seminarraum
Einzeltermin | Fr, 31.01.2025, 10:15 - Fr, 31.01.2025, 11:45 | C 14.027 Seminarraum | Written Test
Inhalt: This seminar addresses the role, achievements and shortcomings of international law and relevant global and regional actors and institutions in achieving sustainable ocean governance. Its main focus is on the international legal framework governing the sustainable use and protection of the oceans and the international institutions established for the purpose of, or involved in, implementing these legal frameworks (for example, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the International Seabed Authority (ISA) or regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs)). In the media, we regularly read about the shortcomings of this legal and institutional order (such as the ongoing ‘tragedy of the commons’), with journalists writing bestselling accounts of the oceans as a “lawless frontier” and filmmakers reaching broad audiences with activist documentaries examining “human impacts on marine life”. Against that backdrop, this seminar aims not only to foster an understanding of ocean governance as an integrative concept – i.e., drawing from a broad normative framework – but also to diagnose the reasons for its shortfalls. Specifically, we will focus on environmental sustainability rather than all facets of what ‘sustainable’ ocean governance may entail (e.g., social sustainability, such as human rights, etc.). In essence, we will consider the legal and institutional dimension of UN Sustainable Development Goal 14 (“Life below Water”), which encourages us to “[c]onserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development”. The seminar begins by providing a general introduction to the functioning of international law and the main pillars and tenets of the global order of the oceans (particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)). Thereafter, the seminar analyzes specific persistent and/or contemporary challenges and recent or ongoing developments with respect to sustainable ocean governance. These topical sessions and the examples and/or case-studies examined in them highlight the importance not only of international law but also of its implementation through the prescription and enforcement of regional (for example, European) and domestic (for example, German) law.

Inhalt: This short course provides an overview of key approaches to international political economy, with a focus on the determinants of trade policy. Highlighting the role of interests and institutions on both the domestic and international level, it begins with competing systemic theories, which emphasize power, social purpose, and international institutions. It then turns to the domestic arena and examines the role of interest groups in the formation of coalitions in favor or against free trade as well as social and political institutions, which shape trade policy. Taken as a whole, this course provides students with analytical tools to understand the forces that shape economic globalization, and the backlash against it, in the third decade of the 21st century and beyond.

The structural transformation of the public sphere / The structural transformation of the private sphere (Seminar)
Dozent/in: Julian Müller
Termin:
14-täglich | Mittwoch | 14:00 - 17:30 | 23.10.2024 - 29.01.2025 | C 12.112 Seminarraum
Inhalt: The distinction between the private and the public sphere is a central distinction within political theory. Hannah Arendt, with a view to ancient Greece, defined the public sphere as the genuine place of the political, and indeed we usually understand politics as a mode of public negotiation of collective affairs. If we take a closer look, we will realise that the distinction between private and public is no longer so clear-cut. Not least the emergence of social media has created a number of hybrid forms of private and public as well as semi-public spaces. Politicians today are presenting themselves not only as public officials, but also as real people with real problems and insecurities, sharing their photo albums and hosting their own podcasts. This development can certainly be criticised and seen as a new "tyranny of intimacy" (Richard Sennett), but we should also bear in mind the constraints of current politics and the changed expectations of political personnel. In the seminar, classical theories of the public sphere will be discussed and applied to current issues and concrete empirical cases.

Theories, Practices, and Theologies of Liberation (Seminar)
Dozent/in: Sebastián Eduardo Dávila
Termin:
wöchentlich | Mittwoch | 10:15 - 11:45 | 14.10.2024 - 31.01.2025 | C 12.015 Seminarraum
Inhalt: The seminar discusses central texts from the so-called theology of liberation since the 1960s, especially in Latin America, relating its main concepts, theories and methods to later theories, for example on decoloniality, and contemporary political and cultural practices. Examples include the tension between – Catholic – practices of faith and anti- or decolonial, Marxist and feminist struggles; the relation between the concepts of liberation and emancipation, but also between theological methods – for instance biblical hermeneutics –and secular (or post-secular) critical traditions of thought. Possible authors include Gustavo Gutiérrez and Archbishop Óscar Romero, Michelle Gonzalez and Marcella Althaus-Reid.
