Wilhelm Educational Complex, Tema/Ashaiman, Ghana
Role: teaching assistant
Freundeskreis humanitäre Hilfe has been working towards better education in Ghana since 1999, when it established the Wilhelm Educational Complex in co-operation with educator Susie Ennin und Pastor Franklin Asamoah. The school enables around 300 children and young people of modest means to attend school.
The Freundeskreis strives to reduce child labour and encourage school participation through its sponsorship programme for children at the Complex. Many pupils there are sponsored by donors from the northern Lower Rhine region and beyond.
Donations have been used to:
- build and furnish the kindergarten, primary school und junior high school
- finance teaching aids and equipment (including a small chemical laboratory, a PC room, visual aids and a library)
- provide a daily meal and regular medical checkups for the children
- pay the wages of teachers, assistants and other staff
- provide further professional education for teaching staff
Other activities in Ghana include the sale of hand-made products such as traditional Kente fabric, recycled-glass beads and wooden masks. These items are sold at markets, festivals and other events and provide a valuable income-generating opportunity for communities in need.
