Theme: “How do we rise better, resilient and inclusive from COVID-19? ‘ESD for 2030’ framework and its role in building forward better”.

In this conversation, we had Ms Won Jung Byun, Senior Project Officer in ESD Section at UNESCO Headquarters talking about the role of the recently adopted ‘ESD for 2030’ framework and the Roadmap on how to build forward from the pandemic with more resilience towards inclusion and how can this framework help us to achieve that. Can we turn this catastrophe into a catalyst for the transformations long needed? Amidst the recent initiatives to foster stronger role of education, the Institute for Sustainable Development and Learning (ISDL) looks at the ‘ESD for 2030’ framework as a potential catalyst for Agenda 2030.

Won Jung Byun is currently Senior Project Officer in the Section of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) at UNESCO Headquarters. Won’s work at UNESCO is mainly focused on ESD policy, in particular on preparation for the new global framework on ESD for the period of 2020-2030 called ‘ESD for 2030’ and its roll-out through its Roadmap. She is also the team’s focal point on the organization of the UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development (May 2021, Berlin, Germany) where global support for the ESD for 2030 framework will be mobilized. Before joining UNESCO, she has worked as executive director for the United Nations University’s programme Regional Centre of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development (RCE) Tongyeong, Republic of Korea since 2005 and co-founded Tongyeong Education Foundation for Sustainable Development (2011) and an education centre called Sejahtera Forest(2015), to promote ESD at local, national and regional level. Won also served in various committees including as Regional Coordinator for 42 RCEs in Asia-Pacific in 2009-2014.
